Goff Family
« on: Thursday 13 August 09 11:59 UTC (UK) »

Hi, Hope somebody out there can help.
I'm looking for any information on Goff's particulalry from around the Newark, Southwell and Muskham areas.
I'm particularly looking for a Charles Goff my Great Grandfather, born around 1871 I know he married Ada Frances Talbot in 1919 and died in 1953 and that his father was John Goff (taken from his marriage cert.)  but I can't find any trace of his birth.

Any Goff information would be gratefully received.

Hi all

Do you know if Charles had any siblings?  There is a family of GOUGH's
in Nottingham around that time and father John is a traveller.

What information do you have that make you think they were from Newark, Southwell and Muskham?

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately I know very little about Charles at the minute he's one of my "brick walls". Family members always told me he came from Sheffield, but I found this to be wrong. I have searched through various Charles Goff's born around the time and managed to eliminate some of them. I have to admit I haven't checked on the ones for Shropshire or Staffs thanks for that I'll look at those.
As for his marriage certificate; The register office Southwell. Charles Goff married Ada Frances Talbot 22 April 1919 he was 48 years, Bachelor, Farm Labourer resident in North Muskham. His father was John Goff (deceased) Labourer. witnesses were a W Cox and Amy Cox.
As for why I think he came from the Newark area, bear with me.... I found a baptism record in the Newark records for a Charles Gof son of Joseph and Susannah dated 31 Mar 1835. This would be about right for this Charles to have a son John, who went onto have a son Charles (the one I'm looking for. Who in turn went onto have a son John (my grandfather!) I was working on the fact that they could have named their eldest sons after their own fathers. Hope that makes sense. It's a tenuous I know but it's all I've got to work on at the minute.

Sorry for the long winded reply, hope it makes sense.....
