Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any information, or even possibly a photo, of Shindra(h) House which was near Hunton. My 4xgreat-grandfather, John Butterfield, was the occupier at the time of the 1841 census and it seems as though one of his great-grandsons (Albert Hauxwell) bought the property in 1904. There doesn't seem to have been any family connection to the house between those dates as subsequent censuses have other families living in the house. Albert was born and raised in nearby Richmond so I'm not sure if the purchase of this house was a coincidence or not.
If anyone has any memories of the village, and as to whether the house was still standing in recent years, I'd be interested in knowing.

Hello Paula,
With reference to Shindra, this property appears to have had one or two name changes over the years. Looking at the image in 1841 when John Butterfield lived there, unless I'm mistaken the enumerator has named it Sindra House:

According to the transcript for Bulmers Directory 1890, it was Shindria :

If you look at the following link, I believe this is the property as it is named now, I haven't included the present name out of respect to the current owners.

Hope this will be of some help to you !!
Kindest regards,
Pels.

Hi again Paula,
I couldn't help but notice you have been online since my reply, if you don't feel the information I've supplied is correct, I can always have another look, but without any acknowledgment I'm unable to do that.
Pels.

Apologies, I didn't have time to reply and didn't have my notes with me. I applied for John Butterfield's will and in it he named Shindra House - he left it, and other buildings, in trust to his two grandchildren (William Hauxwell and Dorothy Jane Nelson). He named two other men who had the right to use the buildings and pay rent. Neither grandchild appears to have lived in the house. My next task is to find out if there are any deeds to the house and when the trust stopped owership. As to why the spelling has changed several times is still a mystery, as JB named in 'Shindra' in his will.
Many thanks for your help.
