Lost in 1841
« on: Thursday 13 August 09 21:07 UTC (UK) »

George  Hullah and Harriet, nee Redman, had the following children, according to the IGI:

1. FREDERICK WILLIAM HULLAH -
Gender: Male Christening: 03 MAR 1835 Saint James, Westminster, London, England

2. SARAH EMMA HULLAH -
Gender: Female Christening: 29 JAN 1838 Saint James, Westminster, London, England

3. ALFRED JOHN HULLAH -
Gender: Male Christening: 25 MAR 1840 Saint James, Westminster, London, England

4. ELLEN HULLAH -
Gender: Female Christening: 02 JUN 1834 Saint James, Westminster, London, England

5. ROBERT HULLAH -
Gender: Male Christening: 07 JUN 1830 Saint James, Westminster, London, England

Frederick I can trace back in Ripon and then Manchester from 1851 onwards:

HO107 Piece 2281 Folio 287 Page 18,
RG9 Piece 3196 Folio 127 Page 15,
RG10 Piece 4003 Folio 68 Page 36,
RG11 Piece 3887 Folio 18 Page 30,
RG12 Piece 3158 Folio 120 Page 28

After the (suspiciously close - q1 1889) deaths of his first wife Alice nee Anderson, and her sister, Sarah, who has stayed with the couple since they married in 1858, he re-marries to Ann Leach in 1890 and then disappears too - possibly emigrating.

But, the rest of the family seems to have disappeared entirely - I can find no trace on the censuses. Hullah seems to be a mainly Yorkshire name, so what were George and Harriet doing in London and where did they go?

Hi David

might look a bit like HULLAK....

1841: West Street - Golden Square, St James Westminster
HO107 /  Piece 735 /  Book: 9 /  Folio: 19 /  Page: 33
Geo. HULLAH 30, Boot M. - N
Harriet HULLAH 30 - N
Fred'k HULLAH 10 - Y
Ellen HULLAH 6 - Y
Will'm FRIER 25, Boot M - N
John GOODMAN 31, Boot M - N

Sadly, it appears they were recently bereaved of their son Alfred at the time of the 1841, and that not too long after the death of daughter Sarah, either:

FreeBMD:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
DEATH: Sep Qtr 1839 - St James Westminster - Sarah Emma HULLAH
BIRTH: Mar Qtr 1840 - St James Westminster - Alfred John HULLAH
DEATH: Jun Qtr 1841 - St James Westminster - Alfred John HULLAH

So this leaves, as at 1841 only son Robert b abt Jun 1830 unaccounted for - he may also not have survived but perhaps died before the start of Civil registration.

Cheers

oops sorry, Jaques - you first  Grin   Grin - I modified my post to add it in, not realising you'd already found that extra info

David, is it so that Frederick didn't have any children (at least up to 1881?)

cheers

Frederick was a Currier in 1881 (not a Carrier as has been indexed)
In 1891 his age has been mis-transcribed as 51 - the image shows 57.

1891:6 Dudley Street, Stretford, Manchester, Lancashire
RG12 / Piece: 3158 /  Folio 120 /  Page 28
Head: Frederick HULLAH 57, Currier and Leather Dealer. b Westminster, London
Wife: Ann HULLAH 39, Shopkeeper, b Manchester, Lancs
Sister: Jane DONALDSON 50, unm, b Manchester Lancs

DEATH: Mar Qtr 1895 - Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire - 8c,  484
Frederick HULLAH age 62

Barton Upon Irwell district covers Stretford.

Also fits with him having married Anne LEACH in Chorlton, Lancs in 1890

Cheers

Hello Anmly, Jacques

Thanks for your help - I need, evidently, to brush up on my search skills  Embarrassed or maybe it's that sometimes you're too close to the wood to see the trees.

I've been puzzled about Frederick Hullah's London origin as there's quite a lot of Hullah's in and around Ripon where a big chunk of my ancestors lived, so I'm interested to see what his parent's were up to down there. I was hoping to find some 1851 census returns to get the birthplaces, so I might be able to do that with the 1841 information.

Frederick ended up as a currier, which is preparing leather for use by other leather trades and was hard work, although he seems to have worked himself up in Manchester to become a leather dealer too; several other family members were also involved in this trade.  I'm also puzzled about the death of his first wife and her sister - I really need to save up my pocket money and get the death certificates. The deaths are quite close together and his re-marriage follows quickly after. Or maybe I'm just looking for a non-existant skeleton or two  Grin Grin There is a rumour that his sister-in-law Sarah was "simple," so maybe she was being looked after by her older sister.

From the 1901 census, it looks as though Annie Leach may have been married previously as Mary H Pedlar was born well before Frederick and Annie married.  Just spotted a Frederick Hullah death too, in 1895, registered in Barton in Irwell, Lancs, so this may be my Frederick.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Dawn

Thanks for the extra information - it confirms the details I had already, and adds a little extra in that it tells me where they lived.
