Educating our ancestors?

I have a convict Gifford WHITE he was sentenced to life overseas after a trial in Huntingdon in 1844.
His crime was writing a threatening letter to his employer.
How would he have been educated in that time would he have gone to a school?
Are there school records for this time in history?

Jennie,

I googled "education in 19th century England" and came up with several interesting sites.  One in particular http://www.localhistories.org/19thcent.html  I really recommend.  Apparently many children in early 19th century England received at least a rudimentary education.

I haven't paid close attention but I believe most of the people in my family tree indicated they could read and write when asked.  I am going add a fact to Family Treemaker to record that in the future.
