Joseph William Griffiths according to the 1841 census was a clockmaker aged 25 and living in London.
He was, however, from Stonehouse, Devon. He later went on to be a bookseller. Can anyone give me some advice as to how i go about finding out about jospeh?

Hello
I also have Griffiths from East Stonehouse, but unaware of a Joseph.
In 1841, was he married? Do you have any details of children? If he had any children born beteween quarter 3 1837 and the census in 1841 you could find out his wife's name then look for the marriage to find his father's name.
Other than that you will have to resort to parish records.
If you have any other information let me know and I will see if we have a connection.

Hello again
I am a bit confused. I looked up the 1841 census and found one match - living in Angel Alley. Is this the correct person? If so, it states he was born in the county. How do you know of the Stonehouse connection?

Please find attached details which were kindly supplied to me of the 1861 census which is the most specific. In the 1851 census it merely says he was born in Plymouth which I think is close to Stonehouose

Thanks for the clarification.
I have looked at my line and can't see any obvious connection.
My Griffiths family are:
Benjamin born c. 1800
Son Benjamin born c. 1837. Marriage certificate states father Benjamin was a labourer. Benjamin jr. was a seaman on HMS Cumberland at the time of his marriage in 1861. His wife was Mary Jane Vennen. Unfortunately I haven't found him on any census (was probably at sea) so I don't know if he was born in Devon or not.
In 1861 they were living at 1 Central Street, Plymouth. They had 4 children: Mary born 1863 Emma born 1867 William Thomas born 1868 Elizabeth born 1871
William Thomas was my great grandfather.
Stonehouse was a fairly small area so there may well be a connection.
Did you find Joseph's father's name from the marriage certificate?
