Hello all My great grandfather William Alexander Steel was born 1863 in Mile End. In 1885 he married Harriet Jackson in Bethnal Green. If I order the marriage cert will it show the parents names? I am struggling to identify him in the 1871 and 1881 censuses - there are a couple of possibilities but dont know which would be right as none of them give Mile End as his place of birth - instead, other parishes which I believe are nearby but I dont know enough about London geography to make an educated guess. Thanks for any advice val

Hi
1901 census
RG13 334 folio 100 99 Duckett Street Mile End Old Town William A Steel 37 Head Married Carman Houndsditch London Harriett Steel 34 Married Wife Stepney Harriett R Steel 12 Daughter Stepney Maud E Steel 11 Daughter Stepney Emma E Steel 8 Daughter Stepney
Since Houndsditch is in the square mile of the city, this birth registration (the only one for a William Alexander) would be compatible. East London registration district was the east section of the city.
Births Sep 1863 STEEL William Alexander E London 1c 2
Regards
Valda

Hi
They seem to be transcribed in the surname Red. On the index I use they were Reel. The census enumerator has not written the surname clearly.
