Ashton Bros Cotton Mill Hyde
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 06:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi  There,

Would anyone have any photos of Ashton Bros Cotton Mill or know where I can obtain any from, My Mother worked there  at one stage, Marian Leah not sure the years I know it was before 1956. We  lived not far away once when I lived in Hyde. My Grandma Gladys Broadhurst worked there also I was told till she was about 16 yrs old she would have been working there in 1920 she left when she was about 16yrs old,as she had a child to look after, but did not get married she lived with her Mother .  I never knew my Grandma Gladys as she died 6 years before I was born, I also had an second cousin working for a short time Gerald Bradbury.  I remember standing outside the Cotton Mill   asking for a penny  for the guy ,it was a traddition in those days. we made a stuffed doll looked like a rag doll only bigger.this was to celebrate  bonfire night 5th Nov  my brother would be with me or a freind.
My Mother was a bobbiner, there and Gladys was a cotton Weaver.
Especially photos of 1920 era of time would be great.
Appreciate anything  if possible thanks.

There's a piece on the Tameside website about the business with a much earlier photo
http://www.tameside.gov.uk/hyde/history
and
http://www.tameside.gov.uk/hyde/history/photos
A straight google search & slecting images leads to several photos of varying dates

Hi fishy,
I would have given you the same info as mshrmh - by the by I went to Hyde Grammar school and was in Ashton House !!!
You don't by any chance have a Hannah Broadhurst in your tree born 1811 ?  I know from the census she was born in Newton, I've looked through the Parish Registers for both Mottram and Newton and not found her - she is my 2x gr grandmother, any help would be very useful.

Hi Mumsie,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have looked  up my Broadhurst family  for you but only have a Hannah Broadhurst christening 17th May 1818 at Saint Michael Ashton-under-lyne Lancs England.
Hannah was one of four children .  Hannahs parents were Daniel and Martha.
I got that information when I was  a member with genes reunited some years ago, thats as far back 1818 I have gone with the Broadhurst family of mine.  Hope this is helpfull to you.

Let me know if it is thanks.

Hi mshrmh.
Thank you so very much for your quick reply, and looked at the first website  got the photos of Hyde and info printed thankyou very interesting.

However the second website nothing came up, said do I want to deactivate yes or no, didnt know what it meant so tried yes and then no, so nothing came up, I tried the end of website where it said photos and got the Hyde photos again . was that just another website address the same as the first one you gave me , it looked very simular, exept it said photos on the end of website. If you know there should be something on that second website other than one you sent me on the first website the photos of Hyde.  Let me know please.

Thanks again anyway I love the photos of Hyde I will keep for my research on Hyde where I once lived.
I lived in elizabeth st HYde off manchester road till 12 then moved to clarendon rd Hyde at 21 yrs old emigrated to Australia in 1967. Came back in 2003 for a visit, hopefully may get there one day again I hope. theres lots I would have liked to research when I was there, but did not have the time.

appreciate your help thanks.

Hi again Fishy,
If you get any more information on the Broadhursts I will be very interested - I think the fact that you've got a 'Hannah' bodes well as names tended to stick in families in those days. and Ashton isn't far from Newton.
Thanks for replying.
Have you tried emailing Tameside Archive and Library as I'm sure they'll have a picture of Ashton Brothers - I live in Sussex now but was recently up there and they have so many books on the area and may do you a photocopy for a small price.

Hi Mumsie,

Yes  I  will let you know if anything arround that date comes up in my search , but I think now got enough info on my Broadhursts .  Perhaps that Hannah is the one you want, Are you absolutely sure that your Hannah was not born in 1918, like my Hannah.?  I have found some photos of Ashton Bros, I had  one before now have lots more. I am interested  in anything about my Grandma Gladys I never knew. Have photos of her and that she worked at Ashton Bros. Now trying to find iinfo on her husband William ford, I was told he was a constable in Police but not sure where I think it was Ashton as he lived on Ashton Road  Newton Hyde. I must send away for their marriage certifcate that may say what is employment was hey!.

This Hannah you are researching for, where is she in your family, and is it on your Mums side or dad, Mine is on my Dads side.
