Inquest records

Does anyone know how I could access the Inquest Records for November 1861 in Spalding?

Would the local newspaper have reported the death? If so where would I find the records?

If Lincolnshire is like other areas inquest records don't survive.  The only way you can check them is the local papers but again not all were reported

Inquest records have a very patchy survival rate. They can only be accessed after 75 years; if they survive at all  records for Spalding should be deposited at Lincolnshire Archive. First obtain a copy of the relevant death certificate, then establish from Lincolnshire Library service which newspapers circulated in the are3a at the time. Start with the local paper for the day after the death, and then work carefully forwards. At that time inquests were held very quickly indeed, (no refridgeration), and details of the death and inquest would be reported in full and lurid detail. I've been through this with the inquest on my grandmother at Boston in 1901, the records still had the power to shock over 90 years later. So be prepared for what may be a traumatic experience. Good luck!

Thank you for your help.  Smiley

I'll contact the Archive now and see if the newspaper records are still available. His death certificate gives the date of the Inquest so I don't have to do much searching.

Should have said previously Margaret that at that time the press was really sensationalist by today's standards, so if the death was accidental or traumatic the press will have reported it fully.

A further thought, Margaret, Have you tgried googling "Sudden death Spalding Lincs (Surname of deceased) 1861. I have just tried this, and there are several deaths listed, as you know the surname you should find it there if it's on the web.

I tried a combination of words and names but nothing came up. In fact I also tied a few different web sites but couldn't find a thread to move me on. I thought it might be easy because I have the death certificate so I know names and dates etc.

I think I'll just have to leave it. Looks like  I'll never know why he died even though I know what he died from.

Thanks for your suggestion though I appreciate it.
