Trying to trace parents of Alexander McGregor born about 1759 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew. IGI shows parents John McGregor and Ann Menzies of Dull, Perth. This couple married on Nov. 23, 1765 (6 years after Alexander's birth?). Mother is shown as born in 1744 which would make her 15 years old when Alexander was born (unlikely although not impossible). There's a family group on IGI for these parents which includes Alexander born about 1759 in Kilomalcom, Renfrew and then twins born in 1767 and another son in 1768, born in Dull, Perth. If both parents were born in Dull, married in Dull and the three youngest children born in Dull, then doesn't it seem strange to have Alexander born in Renfrew. He doesn't seem to fit in this family. There's also another entry on IGI for an Alexander McGregor born about 1766 in Kilmalcom, Renfrew showing parents John McGregor and Ann Menzies. I'm very confused. Any ideas?
Hi Genetrix firstly welcome to rootschat I would be wary of the births on IGI for Alexander McGregor born Kilmacolm as they are all submitted entries and can be wrong have you looked at OPR births on Scotlands People site or have you found him on any of the censuses to see if he gives his place of birth Elaine
Thanks for the welcome Elaine. Yes, I've spent ages on Scotland's People and mostly cannot confirm anything from this search on IGI. I did, however, find another entry on IGI for Alexander McGregor born in Kilmalcom, Renfrew about 1756 (christened in 1758 in Hamilton) showing a different mother. Father is John McGregor and mother is Marion Brown who appear to have been married in 1749 in Lanark and Alexander is listed as the 2nd child. I've been able to confirm this Alexander's birth (or christeneing) on SP in Hamilton in 1758. This look more likely than the Perth entry. No, I cannot trace an entry on the census since they didn't start till 1841, and he'd have to have "expired" by then. Thanks for your help though. Tricia.
