Hi, I was wondering if someone could do a marriage lookup for Thomas Wright and Elizabeth Anderson in Derby both born about 1830, marriage date being roughly around 1850. I think I found it on Freebmd as being Sep 1849 in Derby, but would be grateful if someone could confirm this. I am also looking for the baptism of Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah Anderson (?), who I think was taken on by Thomas as his own when he married Elizabeth as later Sarah married his brother, Arthur. Sarah was born around 1850 in Derby however after finding this possible marriage in 1849, then presumably she was born early 1849, her census entries put her at being born 1849/1850. Any information about Elizabeth and Sarah (father's names/occupations etc.) would also be fantastic. Thanks.

The Derbyshire Registrars Marriage Index shows that this marriage took place at the Derby Register Office. The only way to see a copy is to obtain the certificate.

Hi Tuppie, Thanks for that-what is the address of the correct registry office to get the certificate, does anyone know? Also, I'm struggling to find anything out about the birth of Sarah Anderson (presumably) born about 1849, I can't find anything on Freebmd, Freereg or Familysearch, it's like she hasn't been registered can anyone help?

Hi The Register Office, Royal Oak House, Market Place, Derby, DE1 3AR. Tel: 01332 256526/35/36. Fax: 01332 256525. E-mail: registeroffice@derby.gov.uk Many births were not recorded during the early years of civil registration. Parents were only legally obliged to inform a registrar of the details of a birth if the registrar demanded them. Many people thought that a childs baptism was a legal alternative to registration. The position improved from 1875 when the Births and Deaths Act 1874 imposed a duty upon those present at a birth or death to report it to a registrar. There were fines for non-registration and penalties for late registration ( more than 42 days after a birth). Despite this some births and deaths after 1875 have not been recorded. In order to avoid paying a late registration penalty some parents reported a later (incorrect) date of birth for a child.
