Woodcock family Rock Moor House
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 16:25 UTC (UK) »

My maternal Grandmother Elizabeth Woodcock 1868 was the illegitimate daughter of Ellen Woodcock 1844. The family lived at Rock Moor House and I believe there was at least two other daughters and several illegitimate children but have been unable to trace them. Elizabeth married 1890 have found her on 1871 census but no trace on 1881 census. Any help appreciated

Rock Moor House is somewhere beside Longhoughton in Northumberland I think it comes under the Parish of Rock.
Elizabeth was born there in 1868 Ellen was born in Bamburgh Parish 1844,her parents were Andrew and Mary.

Thanks

Is Rock not in the Parish of Longhoughton

Rock is not far from there only about 3 - 8 miles away I am guessing

Have a look at a map of Northumberland you will see
Rock, Rennington and Longhoughton, Boulmer, and Embleton ,are all small villages in the same area

Hi there,

Rock is a parish in its own right - about 4 miles from Longhoughton

Hi

This is Ellen and Elizabeth 1871 although they were mother and daughter not aunt and neice, the census records aren't always correct. I have discovered that Ellen married James Hudson in 1873 they had seven children between 1874 and 1890 all born at Longhoughton, the family later moved to Morwick beside Acklington. Elizabeth married Benjamin Clark 1890 but I have been unable to find any trace of her between 1871 and 1890,

Thanks for your help

A wee note on geography/administration of the past.

In 1600s and before the "ancient" Parish of Embleton comprised several "townships" ( not a very apt term to describe sub-divisions of a parish- nothing to do with Towns). Rock was one of Embleton's townships.

Through population increases/shifts Rock got itself a chapel/church, but still a satellite of "mother" parish church. Satellite churches were called " chapels of ease". Ease of travel for the flock !

The next step would have been a chapel of ease growing, to become an independant parish in own right.   I don't know if/when Rock became a Parish.

Rock church records available from 1700s.     Church " events" in Rock before that era, would have been recorded in Embleton's parish registers.

Is this the family in 1861,  Class: RG9; Piece: 3880; Folio: 99; Page: 8; ?

These folk are in my tree, my line goes down through Ellen's brother George and in 1861 they were at Ratcheugh, Longhoughton, Northumberland.

I have been wondering who the little girl Mary (aged 2) belonged to . She was listed as the granddaughter of the head of the household (Andrew Woodcock senior). I assumed she was the daughter of either Isabella (20) or Ellen (17), though  Ellen would only have been about 15 when the child was born.
That census return says that she was born in Lesbury. I have looked, and the online Bishop's Transcripts of the Lesbury parish registers do not cover the time of her birth, nor is she in the IGI (or not with the surname Woodcock).

Someday I may get to the Northumberland archives and see if there is anything in the baptism records to shed some light on it.

Hi

The 1891 census gives Mary as Isabella's daughter, Isabella had three daughters Mary 1859,  Margaret and Jane there is a christening record for Jane 8th Oct 1876 at Longhoughton mother's name Isabella Woodcock.

Mary 1844  had one daughter Ellen 1862

Ellen had 3 children before she married ~Alexander 1864 who died in 1966,
Elizabeth 1868 (my grandmother) - Mary Jane 1872. She later married James Hudson and had another 7 children.

So far I have uncovered 7 illegitimate children in the Woodcock family. (Shades of Catherine Cookson books?)

They take a lot of sorting out

Thanks for the information, I am still sorting out the 'direct line' but will file this away for when I look properly at siblings.

and yes, they are often difficult to unravel, that's partly why this is so much fun! :-)
