1917 Military Death : Tyneside:
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 21:54 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
This is a BIG ask regarding a death in 1917 of a soldier in the North Staffs Regt. 3rd Battalion. I believe this was a reserve batt & the soldiers were awaiting posting to the front & were on home guard duties. But on the 30/10/1917 Pte WALTER REDDING died. So..does anyone have any knowledge about how Pte Redding died Huh I have made a note of the DEC QTR 1917 Death of Walter Redding NEWCASTLE. Does anyone know if military deaths would have been registered ??

Thank you for looking at my post.
Regards,
Margaret.

You will only get that info by buying a copy of his death cert.

Walter Redding aged 32  Newcastle upon Tyne  Volume 10b Page 119

You can order online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Hi,

My wifes' gt-gt grandfather Matthew Ridley Lamb is listed on cwgc as having died in January 1916 aged 37 and as being in the Northumberland Fusiliers, buried in Westgate Cemetery.

He is also listed in the St. Catherine House indexes for the March qtr of 1916.

I sent off for his death certificate and he died in Gosforth Temporary Military Hospital of Gunshot wounds to the hip and abdomen (27 days) and pneumonia (4 days).

He must have been shot in France, and brought back to England where he died. So I would assume that all military deaths would still be registerd if the death occurred in England.

Thanks,

Darin, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Hi Margaret

There's also a death on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site for a Walter Redding of the North Staffs Regt.

Slight difference.

Coming up with link.

Best wishes

Hi

Details are:

Redding, Walter, Private, Service No 49422, Died 30 Oct 1917, Aged 36,

North Staffordshire Regiment, UK National, Grave/Memorial ref., Old. NG.13,

Grave/ Memorial - West Bromwich : Churchyard extensions.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/06wl/

It looks as if he died in Newcastle but either was buried in West Bromwich, or appears on a memorial there.

When I was searching for a WW1 death for a friend, I phoned CWGC and was told that the details are as were given by the relatives after the war.

They also told me that anyone who died in this country would have a choice - or the family would -  of being buried where they fell, or being returned home.

Best wishes

Thank you all for your input into my request for info. Initially I thought Walter had been buried in West Bromwich, but changed my mind & now think he died in Tyneside & only his name is on the memorial in West Bromwich. I know I can get the death cert from the GRO in London....but how good is the local Record Office in Newcastle ? I know from experience with Birmingham Register Office ( who are 1st class) that if the info I give them does not match up with the cert , then they will  return my cheque to me & not supply the cert. Does this excellent service happen in Newcastle Huh Thanks again for your help.

Hi Margaret

I'm glad it helped.  So I gather all the info is your Walter?  I've not used Newcastle, so I don't know but I'm sure someone will!

Of course the other thing you could do, is see if anyone in West Brom knows if this a memorial or a burial or both, in the churchyard.  For larger places, you would think that by this date they wouldn't have been burying in the churchyard anyway!

If there is a burial register and he's been buried there, it may well have a comment that ties in with the death in Newcastle.  eg Removed from Newcastle.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hello Emms,
I have now confirmed that this IS indeed the Walter Redding in my family tree. His marriage cert from 1915 states that his age is 31 ( so the 36 on the CWG is incorrect..possibly a mistake made by his widow Nancy)! I have asked about the church in West Bromwich & it is not looking likely that there is military section for burials within the church grounds..so leaves me looking more closely at Walter dying & being buried in Tyneside. I probably will get the Newcastle death cert in the near future & I will certainly post the info on here..thanks again for all the advice offered.

Walter Redding is buried in West Brom, along with 112 other Commonwealth graves,

Go onto CWGC ,click on the arrow next to casualty, this will drop down to cemeteries, give it time to changeover, then type or cut and paste WEST BROMWICH (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD EXTENSIONS
Press submit,
Click     WEST BROMWICH (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD EXTENSIONS
Click cemetery reports,then section P-R

Just seen your post on the Staffordshire board,

Yes,I thought about that to,but i got the impression from her last post that she was starting to waver towards a Newcastle burial, when Walter is infact in West Brom, Grave ref, Old. NG. 13.

Hello Brian....THANK YOU SO MUCH, the time I have spent on the CWGC site & I have NOT known about getting info on the cemeteries ! Never too old to learn clearly !! I appreciate that the only way to find out how Walter died is to get the death cert...but I wondered if there was some occurrence that befell the North Staffs Regt or perhaps Walter was the only soldier to die that day & by some miracle there was someone on the site who is an expert in all things Military on Tyneside. Slowly but surely I am getting closer to finding what be fell Walter. My thanks again for all the help offered.

Best regards,
Margaret

I now have the death cert for WALTER REDDING aged 37. He died in 1st Northern General Hospital, of pneumonia....the cert gives his army number & Regiment. The informant was E S Hemsley ( in charge of the body)....so he died in Newcastle but he is buried in West Bromwich, so I will certainly be paying my respects to him there.

Margaret.
