Charles Henry Hand - Updated
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 14:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am trying to trace my Grandfather Charles Henry Hand, he left my Grandmother Edith E Hand (nee Turner) sometime near the 1920's and went to New Zealand telling her "I'll send for you!" My gran was often heard to say (in the 50's) 'He's a bloody long time calling!' .
He appeared in the late 50's early 60's when he put an advert looking for his son in The Isle of Thanet Gazette saying he would like to get in touch with John Henry Hand (my dad, his son), he subsequently came to the pub we had and things didn't go smoothly to say the least! My Gran was very put out, my Dad really didn't want to know and he frightened me to death!
Family stories have it that he went to live with the Maori and had another wife and more children, whatever, he used to carve very strange wooden boxes in is bedroom while he was with us. I believe when realised he had outstayed his welcome he went to Nottinghamshire where I think he/we have relatives.
Mindful of the sticky rules above I looked in the Archway Archives and found his name to appear in probate, of course I would like to have a copy of the will but it is unclear how to go about it.
I am abysmally ignorant regarding New Zealand and he is registered in 1971 (presumably the year of his death) in Silverdale, which I have never heard of and google doesn't tell you much.

Can anyone please have a look to see if there are any more records and could you also advise if I can send for the will by post and would there be a facility to pay online (we live in Spain)?

Thanks all
Lizzielogs

You mention the boxes he carved
Take a look at some of these pics for carvings
http://www.maori.info/maori_art.htm
may help confirm whether his patterns were in style of Maori art, and a possible connection to a maori family

Hi Althea

It certainly is the man mentioned in your first post and an advert in the paper would be great if it could be arranged. I will contact the archives and try to arrange sight of the papers by email.
There definately must be a Maori connection as the picture above the words "The spiral in Maori art " is almost exactly the design.
I am not too sure where I go from here but I will start by following up the above
Thanks for everything you have done

If there had been no divorce from the first wife (i.e. 2nd union was a "common law marriage") ... then (probably) no.

[And I say "probably" - because certificates are very often "full of surprises"].

Hopefully a death or funeral notice will contain information that identifies "wife number 2".

Lu and Althea,
Would you recommend that Trudi buys the death certificate? Would, or might it at least give Charles Henry's parent's names?

I suppose it depends on how well the informant knew Charles, as to the amount of or accuracy of the info that the d/c contains.

Still, if it was me, I think I'd have to buy it. Curiousity would get the better of me.  Grin I imagine it would take a while to get to Spain (not the fastest post in the world  Wink).

 Cheesy    Ruskie

Hmmm  ... I've only just entered this thread (and I see now that there are others, on the same topic).

So were I to make a recommendation ....  yes, I'd certainly suggest the purchase of the death record.

And not the fastest to answer an email either!

Please see these links which all tie together

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,400155.0.html
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=398146.new;topicseen#new

I have been able to spend a little more time on the internet tonight (we live in a mountain town in Spain and the internet connection here is shaky to say the least!!) and thought I would update the threads.

I have been able to order my Grandfathers military record (always supposing he has one) for free by email although it will be sent by post (sometime).

With a couple of false starts I have been able to order his death printout which according to the NZ government site contains more details than the actual death certificate, this is not sent until 8 days from the date of payment and I will have to wait for the post, again because of where we live that is also hit and miss - the postman comes when he feels like it and sometimes he feels like it on a Tuesday!

The details of the marriage certificate are on one of the other links so I will not repeat them here. My puzzles now are - how did he get to New Zealand (are there any records of things like assisted passage from UK to NZ?)?
If anyone has access to war records could they please look and see if there was an address where he was discharged to (air mechanic RNAS).

Patience wasn't one of my virtues.... but now  Roll Eyes
