Hi again Lizzielogs

I wonder if Charles Henry, had a connection with the Silverdale RSA (Returned Services Assocication) ... and whether in his later years, he might have been a beneficiary of their "welfare services" ?

The Silverdale and Districts RSA appears to be a large organisation (with it's own cenotaph and memorial wall - as well as a museum).

Maybe they have a record of C. H. HAND ?

Perhaps you could make an enquiry ?   Email addy at the following site.

email sent to the RSA - will report back when I get a reply!

OK, I can't find a marriage to Irene Johnson in the UK nor can I find a divorce from Edith Elizabeth (Gran) after 1920, however I don't have any subscription sites to search and have gone through FreeBMD for the marriage info.
I am almost certain that Charles and my Gran were never divorced, it was never mentioned in the family and my Mum has no recollection of it, if he divorced her she might have just signed the papers and not mentioned it perhaps. I tried to search the National Archives for the divorce but got myself a bit lost as this internet connection is so slow at the moment.

From the marriage certificate of him and my Gran on June 10th 1916 (my Dad was born 13 March 1917) I have the following

Charles Henry Hand age 23  Air Mechanic RNAS
Edith Elizabeth Turner  age 21  Spinster

So he was in the RN during WW1 which may allow him burial in a soldiers grave even though the number was not his!

All of you on this journey with me know my Grandfather as well as I do!! Extended family, eh !!?

It seems a little unusual that a funeral director would be the informant of a death, you would have thought that would have fallen to a family member or the hospital, or do I have the wrong interpretation of 'informant'?  This was my basis for thinking that his son (Can I put his name on here as there is a chance he is still living??) and he might have been estranged.

Hi Lizzielogs

For some very "New Zealand" reason, funeral directors appear as informants on a great many records.   (I think of all the NZ certs I have, only two or three, show someone other than a funeral director, as informant.)   Strange ... and slightly annoying also.   I often wonder, what info might have been  "screwed up" in the process of the funeral director taking "notes" from a bereaved family member, and then re-recording that data for a death certificate.   Roll Eyes

A possible "estrangement" from son ??     Hmm .. I thought about that earlier ... but the "loving" expression of Charles' death notice seems to suggest otherwise  ... and the grandchildren he was "Pop" to, are mentioned also.
Official records aren't always available to consult, when people are called upon as informants (women also tend to be better informants ... they remember all the little details.   Wink)   But quite probably it was Charles' NZ son, who supplied the info to the funeral director.

Lu

PS    Will get to the PM's shortly.   Smiley

Hi

For those following the saga I had no joy from the Silverdale RSA who do not hold records, but by a roundabout route I have found a contact in the Kilbirnie Branch of the NZSG who knows a John Hand  Undecided
More news when I get it.

Aw   ... shame there was no luck with Silverdale RSA.

Yes, obviously they wouldn't perhaps give personal details of membership or any assistance they may have provided, but why I mentioned it was, that they may have had Charles listed on their "memorial wall"  (seeing as he was "supposedly" as WW1 veteran).    Wink

re:   Irene JOHNSON

There were three ladies of this name who died in or around the Auckland area who seemed likely possibilties "for the wife of Charles".

I checked their death notices, but found no match.   Sad

Hi All

Possible descendants of Charles H. HAND :

Have now made a check of current Electoral rolls - looking good.  Wink    The most likely candidates (as per earlier PM) are actually two different people (poss. father and son ?).

Sending you a further PM Trudi.
