Hi
Could you put it in context perhaps? Where did you get the place name? Which area might it be in?
If it is only just inside the county then it may have been in another county at some point - if you see what I mean.
Could it be a mis-spelling?

Hi Gardener,

I got it from FamilySearch, on the 1881 census. It is given as the birthplace of Luke Aspinall ,who may or may not be my GG Grandfathers brother. The age would be wrong if it was him, but as we know the ages aren`t usually spot on.

Luke was on another census as being born in Glossop. Could it be Woolley Bridge, which is mentioned as their home previously?

And could I be cheeky and ask you another question? Smiley Are Hadfield and Hayfield two different places?  In the 1851 census the family are listed as living at  `Hadfield, Hayfield, Derbys`. I am having real problems as I don`t know the area at all (but I know it better since I started this !!)

Regards
Tracey

Hi Tracey
I have just noticed your question about Hadfield and Hayfield. They are indeed two different places but only about 7 miles apart.

Hadfield lies close to Glossop (some might say that it is now part of the Glossop conurbation) while Hayfield is closer to New Mills and still retains the feel of a large village. Hayfield lies on the lower slopes of Kinder Scout, a beautiful part of the world.
This might also interest you:

Hi. It could well be Wolley Bridge judging by the image. If you would like a copy of it just send me a pm with your email. Comparing the start of the place name with "wife" I would say it begins with "W" and the 1841 has the family at Woolley Bridge
Jesse Aspinal 30
Ann ditto 30
Luke ditto 4
Sophia ditto 2

so born 1837 if that is any help  Smiley

Nell,

Power to the people !!!!

Thanks for that, it gave me a moments distraction from my meanderings all over Derbyshire.

I think it`s Hadfield that I need to be looking at.  I am finding it so much more difficult when (as I previously said) I have no local knowledge of how far away places are, and where they are in relation to one another.

Thank you again, it`s much appreciated.

The address in 1851 is still Woolley Bridge in the township of Hadfield but registration district of Hayfield - that is just the classification system for the census, how they broke a county down into smaller bits.
