George Hughes and Mary Wright
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 17:28 UTC (UK) »

I have a George Hughes married to a Mary Wright in the 1901 Census;
RG13, piece 3917; folio 60; page 18.

1869 George Hughes; 32 a painter b. Liverpool, Lancashire.
1876 Mary Hughes (Wright); 25 b. Morttomley, Lancashire.

I have located their marriage in 1900 Church, St James, 8e 623.

I have also found George in 1891 with his mother Margaret E Hughes 62 widow b. Liverpool with her children Jonathon b. 1870, George b.1869, Catherine b.1873, James b.1879, Issac b.1888 and a boarder Elizabeth Burford b.1871.

In 1881 she appears with again RG11; piece 3670; folio 134 and page 45 with her son William 17 b.1864 the head of the household. Her children Edward b. 1865, Emma b.1866, George b.1868-9, Jonathon b.1869, Catherine b.1877, James b.1879.

I can't find Margaret with her husband and I cannot also find Mary Wright although I can find her parents in 1901;

1848 John Wright 53, Cotton Weaver b. Colne, Lancashire.
1845 Elizabeth Wright 56, Housewife b. Bolsterstone, Yorkshire.
1880 James Wright 21, Cotton Weaver, b. Mortomley, Yorksire.
1884 Alice Wright 17, Cotton Weaver, b. Mortomley, Yorksire.
1886 William Wright 15, Machine Tenter b. Mortomley, Yorksire.
1888 Sam Wright 13, b. Church, Lancashire.

Can anyone help please?

Do you have other info that definitely pinpoints Margaret as his mother?

The reason I ask is that the 1871 has 3 entries for George Hughes b Liverpool 1868-1870

The entries you list above show children born after 1871 but the 1871 shows Margaret as a widow

37 Lombard St - all b Liverpool

Margaret Hughes 36 widow - charwoman
Hugh W 8
Edward 7
Emma 5
George 3
Jonathan A 1

Births September qtr 1863

Hugh William Hughes     West Derby  8b 342

There are a number of William Hughes marriage to a Margaret between 1860-1863 so you would need to buy a copy of one of the children's birth certs to find Margaret's maiden name

Hi,

The BVRI stands for the British Isles Vital Records Index and was at one time available as a set of discs.  It is now free to search on the Latter Day Saints site.  www.familysearch.org  .  Choose "search records" from the list at the top, then click on "record search pilot" .  Once it has loaded enter his name, event - marriage, year 1900 and type in Lancashire.  Hover over the Lancashire bit and select Lancashire England.  The marriage is at the top and if you click on his name it should bring the record up with previously married.

Hope this works.

Thank you so much everyone!

The only query now is finding what happened to Hugh William Hughes married to Margaret as he doesn't appear on any census with her or his children but can be found on the marriage between Hugh William Hughes and Margaret E Duckworth in 1862!

Why do you think he is not on any census?
Prison or Army?

The marriage Certificate of Margaret Ellen Duckworth and Hugh Hughes arrived today.
They were married on July 22nd 1862 at St. Jude, West Derby, Lancashire.

Hugh's father Hugh Hughes Labourer,
Margarets father William Painter.

Both Hugh and Margaret lived at Prospect Street. Margaret made mark. Witnesses John McCarthy, Elizabeth Walmsley (made mark). Certificate purchased. Hugh Hughes married to Margaret is a Labourer.
