Marriage lookup, Pevensey, 1810
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 19:02 UTC (UK) »

Hello there,
Could someone do me a huge favour if poss? I'm looking for a marriage for Charles Elston and Sarah Ball, 2nd April, 1810 in Pevensey, Sussex. I'd love to know if they name their parents - or any other information, maybe even a baptism for children too?  Smiley

Many thanks indeed
best wishes

Well it is an interesting entry on the Sussex Marriage Index.  He is described as otp musician in Warwick and she is otp Militia.    The witnesses are Jn Neates and Anne Dee.   No further details.   The details of parents hardly ever appear on early marriages - unless they happen to be a witness.

The male witness is John BEATES according to my copy.  There is one further small detail - the marriage was after Banns.

Although Militia does appear under the bride's name when Charles is the subject, when Sarah is the subject the description musician in Warwick Militia applies to the groom only - a much more likely reading.

Hi there,
Oh I see, I thought he was in the Militia, but a musician in Warwick - thought it was unususl for ladies to be in Militia? So this reads that he was a musician IN the militia.

I have found his records at The National Archives and have ordered them. They were living in Warwickshire before and after the marriage so goodness knows why they were in Sussex, there are no other family ties there.

Also, if the marriage was after Banns, what does this mean?
Many thanks

Thanks for the correction Stovepipe.  Was dashing to do it and I always forget that the entries may differ if you look at the other person.   Makes much more sense.   After Banns means that the banns of marriage were read in the church for three weeks prior to the marriage.    An announcement of intention to marry.  Same thing happens today.
