Hi Margaret
I dreamed the Mary Jane for mother in the 1871 census (trying to do that search with that of daugher!). Mother Mary is down as Mary A (?Agnes from you have) Burnie in that 1871 entry where she shows as nurse. I do think from what you have on mother Mary Burnie, that young Mary Jane is showing in 1871 with her maternal grandmother.
Big question mark as to whether Mary Taylor ever married - she shows as unmarried in 1851 (free 1851 census for this area www.dgcommunity.net/historicalindexes/census.aspx)
This looks to be Mary in 1841, likely mother and brother, and the first of the daughters and son Robert McWilliam:
Welwood Taylor 25, agri. lab Agnes Taylor 63 Mary Taylor 20 Robert McWilliam 4 Jean Burnie 1
Address: Holmhead, Crossmichael
The 1841 census is the most limited in terms of info. No relationships given within the household and ages for those over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the neares 5 years (although given Agnes Taylor above shows as 63, not sure that is the case for this entry).
The Welwood Cowan we have with Mary Taylor in 1851, I wonder if he was called Welwood after brother (or who we think might be a brother).

This looks like the birth entry potentially for Mary Taylor: 08 JUN 1815 Crossmichael, to parents Richard Taylor and Agnes Cowan. Two other sisters show:
JEAN TAYLOR Birth: 15 NOV 1808 Crossmichael, Kirkcudbright ELISABETH TAYLOR Birth: 22 AUG 1810 Crossmichael, Kirkcudbright
I think this is one of those infuriating batches on IGI www.familysearch.org where only girls' births and christening details were loaded on. There may be more entries showing on the Old Parish Register index on SP.

Hello, Jean Many thanks for the lead to the 10 free credits, have registered and putting together what I want to look up.
Monica Many thanks for the website - free census for dg area - this is a real goldmine. Thanks to your efforts it appears Mary Jane and her mum (and grandma too) are reasonably well sorted out.
Mary Jane would be the stepdaughter of James and therefore not Porteous or Glover at all. I can slot her nicely into the family tree and leave her in peace.
I do have two issue of James P and Mary Burnie to follow up at a later date, but not going there as yet!
This has been a most intriguing chase - thank you for making it so interesting. I do appreciate all the help you have given me.
Kind regards Margaret

Margaret, another excellent site for free census information is http://freecen.rootsweb.com/
It is an on-going project by volunteers. Have a look at the database coverage which is broken down by area (sadly Kircudbrightshire is not as yet on). Particularly good for 1841 and quickly rising 1851.
Good luck with your searches.

Many thanks Monica - always good to know of avenues to follow. Very interested in Tundergarth, Dalton, Middlebie, Hoddam, Dryfesdale, Lockerbie, areas my Porteous family inhabited. Will try freecen.
Hawkshaw in Tweeedsmuir was a Porteous stronghold, and Spedlin's Castle (Tower) on the River Annan, (which I have visited courtesy of the present owners), is the first trace of my progenitor.
Many thanks Regards Margaret
