Hi Dot,
Stainmore is up off the A66.  A very bleak area with a few isolated farms and not much else though there was some mining at one time.  It is divided into two.  North and South on either side of the road.  The registers for that time are on the IGI on www.familysearch.org so Thomas may show up there or it might be worth look at St Michael's Church in Brough, which was the nearest market town.  Kendal record office will hold these too.
How do you know his date and place of birth?   Did he survive to census time?

He is on the 1841 census with his wife Hannah. (She was born in Yorkshire)
I am presuming that this is the correct line I am following for my MILLER's.
I do have a post on DURHAM regarding this family.
As far as I can make out, he moved to DURHAM and had his children there.
Hope you can help.

Hi Dot
I cannot find Thomas in 1841 in Westmorland.  Can you give me the census reference?   The 1841 does not show relationships so there is no guarantee that Hannah is his wife - unless you have found them in 1851 or later too.
Is he the one in Durham in 1851 - a gardener?   He is with Hannah and two daughters and his place of birth is shown as Stainmore.

Andrea

Yes, the 1841 census for Durham is the one I found him on. I would very much like to clarify that this is the correct line for my MILLER family.

I have looked at your post on the Durham board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,396835.15.html
and cannot see an explanation as to why you have chosen Thomas and Hannah as parents for James, your ancestor.  Perhaps I have missed something?   Does James' marriage certificate give his father's name as Thomas?     You were asked to provide all details.  Yhey would really help as names. occupation of all including witnesses can be very helpful.   Miller is a very common name.   A lot of people moved to Durham from Westmorland - it was really not far and there was work in the coalfields.

At the moment I cannot give you details of the certs, as I do not have them here. I will sort this out later and post them on here.
Yes. Thomas was stated as James father on his certificate and then I found Hannah and presumed this was correct.
If you think this is incorrect and can find other parents for him I shall be happy to be put on the correct line.
