Online births & deaths Pennsylvania - Completed
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 22:06 UTC (UK) »

I have spotted a RICHARD BIGGS born c1820 England in Putnam County, Pennsylvania in the 1870 census, however I can't find him after this

Also I've found a JOHN & SUSAN BIGGS in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania on the 1850 census but can't find them after this. The census states they had a son George born c1846 in the state.

Is it possible to find the death of Richard Biggs and birth of George Biggs online? I'm in England and don't really know my way round US records yet. Also would a death certificate for Richard Biggs between 1870 - 1880 name his father?

Many thanks,
Judy

Birth and death records for that period are kept in the county in which the birth/death occurred.

Have you checked Family Search Labs pilot project at:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/       they have some records for Philadelphia.

Here is a website with links to some county information:

Hi Judy: I think you've gone amiss somewhere. My home state of Pennsylvania does not have a Putnam County. There is a Putnam in Warren County, Pennsylvania, but that is far north of Allegheny City, where the Biggs were recorded in the 1850 census. Allegheny City is now part of the city of Pittsburgh and is called the North Side.

I also found John and Susanna Biggs in Allegheny City in 1850, but as you say, nothing further.

Birth and death records for what was Allegheny City are at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. You can e-mail them at padept@carnegielibrary.org.

The library's holdings, described at
http://www.clpgh.org/locations/pennsylvania/BirthDeathRecords.html,
include deaths: Allegheny City (1875-May, 1907); births: Allegheny City (1885-October, 1907).

In 1849, 1850, 1854, and 1855, cholera epidemics occurred in Pittsburgh, and Allegheny City probably was involved. This might--or might not--explain why you found no further information on the Biggs.

On the Resource Links of the Allegheny City Society (http://www.alleghenycity.org/), I found an email address for Union Dale Cemetery, which has burials in Allegheny City (and North Side) from 1846 to present. Web address: http://uniondalecemetery.org. According to their Contacts Us page, they charge for $5 for a first lookup and $3 for additional names. An e-mail address is on the Contact Us page.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
