Munitions Factory, Coventry, 1913 -1919
« on: Monday 17 August 09 11:59 UTC (UK) »

 Hi all,

I have reason to believe that my Gt Uncle, John Seymour Davies, was working in a munition/arnaments factory in Coventry at some point between 1913 & 1918.

Can anyone give me an idea of the name of a likely factory and tell me if it's possible that employees records could be held somewhere?

I'm trying to clear up a family mystery so any help/suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

Barbara.

Thanks very much for that, Julie.

It's a really interesting article.

Now all I have to do is find out (somehow) if records were kept of the employees and if so, where I might find them !!!

White and Poppe in Foleshill, Coventry was the munitions company, it was called the National Filling Factory and the complex which was begun in 1915 covered 14.5 acres. The whole site was under militery control and a barracks for the troops was where Rollaston Road now stands.
The works were mainly staffed by girls wearing overalls and accidents were common, one girl had her arm and the side of her face blown off.
My wife's grandmother worked there and we still have her identity pass with her photo inside

White and Poppe produced a magazine during that period called The Limit, I am sure Coventry Archives would have copies or at least know where you can find them.

Hi Al,

I've been without an internet connection since 08.00 AM yesterday and have only just been reconnected so I apologise for the delay in my reply.

Thanks very much for the info, really interesting and serves as a reminder of just how dangerous these factories were to work in.

I will try & contact Coventry Library and see if they can help me.

Cheers

Barbara..

Looks like the Coventry Archives goes under a new name now, you can Email them at
historycentre@coventry.gov.uk

or phone  024 7683 4060

I think they may well be of more help than the Library but you could try both.
