John Love - Missing?
« on: Monday 17 August 09 15:27 UTC (UK) »

I have a relative called John Love who was born in Jackfield, Ironbridge in 1833. Married Susan Turner in 1857 and is shown on the 1861 census as living in Essington, Staffs with his wife Susan and son Robert. However on the 1871 census Susan is shown as married but boarding with her mum with sons Robert (12) Hezekiah (9) and Mercy (3) and there is no sign of John. On the 1881 census  Susan is marked as widowed. However I cannot find any death certificate for John Love. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hiya Kev

Save your money

Off the W-ton Archives site buried St Peters 17 Dec 1876 John LOWE 45years Locksmith

Could he perhaps have been working abroad? One woman in my tree always appeared without her husband listed as married until 1901 when she was a widow but some thoughtful soul had written 'husband working in India on the railroads' on the 1891

Hi Willow,

Not sure now whether this is the right one as John Love was a coal miner and not a lock smith?Huh

Willow,

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Have been checking through the census' again and still cannot find sight nor sound of him. It doesn't help that he seemed to move about a lot, 1841 at home in Shropshire, 1851, a visitor in Willenhall, 1861 living in Essington.

Oh well I'll keep looking. I did find a John Love that was classed as a lunatic in 1871 but he was also a different John Love.

Just looked him up on 1911 census and he is still alive as is his wife

LOVE, JOHN     HEAD     MARRIED         M     77     COAL MINER - HEWER     BROSELEY - SALOP - SHROPSHIRE
LOVE, SARAH    WIFE    MARRIED    20    F    72       HUCKNALL NOTTS

curiouser and curiouser!!!

So question is did Susan and John agree to split and class each other as dead?? will have to do some digging as there was another John Love in Broseley at the same time.

Curiouser and Curiouser indeed!

On the 1881 we have John Love b 1830 Brosley prisoner in Gillingham Kent RG11/897 Folio 64 Page 13

On the 1871 there is a John Love b 1833 Brosley married to a Catherine in Wolverhampton but there is a marriage on FreeREG 10.11.1856 at St Georges Wolverhampton for a John Love to a Catherine Gintry

Also have you thought that the couple he is with in 1851 are his sister and brother in law?

A John Love was given 12 years imprisonment by Stafford Assizes on 19.3.1878 for wounding

Unfortunately the entry doesnt give any more information

Catherine is still in Wolverhampton 1881 but without her husband and listed as married

OK working backwards and sideways a bit

Ann wife of James Oliver on the 1851 census

baptism on the IGI for Ann Love 23.3.1823 at Saint Leonard, Broseley, Shropshire parents Robert and Elizabeth

There is also
Mary Ann 3.7.1825
William 9.9.181
Samuel 7.2.830
Marian 13.8.1843
John 28.4.1833

This rules out the John married to Catherine as his father was Thomas

But according to the marriage records he didn't get married to Susan Turner until 1857. However there are Turners at the same place so I wonder if he was working away and possibly met a relative of Susan who introduced the two of them since in 1861 it looks like John and Susan were living next door to Susan's parents. Also John and Susan called one of their sons Hezekiah which is one of the names on the 1851 census. It looks like John had moved over to Staffs for work reasons.

Robert and Elizabeth are the names of the parents of the John I have been looking for. If you don't mind me asking where did you get this info from.

I appreciate greatly all this help!

Hiya Kev

Off the International Genealogical Index (IGI) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Its not complete but very useful. The John who married Catherine was baptised 3.6.1832 Broseley parents Thomas and Sarah

Glad to help  Grin
