Upgrading to Legacy 7
« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 01:32 UTC (UK) »

I am using Standard Legacy 6. I have installed Standard Legacy 7 but am not sure how to move information without the loss of Legacy 6 entries. Any help appreciated.

It was a while ago that I upgraded and I thought it opened up your old family tree normally. However, I would also do the following:
Export all your information to a Gedcom file 'File --> Export to --> GEDcom' this could be used to import information into Legacy 7 if needed.
I would also backup your family file so that it could be restored.

I upgraded to Legacy 7 de luxe.  I have back ups of my tree from Legacy 6 and after Legacy 7 de luxe downloaded, I just clicked on my last back up and it opened in Legacy 7.  After that I just back up as usual when I add any more information.

There weren't any problems.

You should not export a GEDCOM file from Legacy 6.0 in order to import it in Legacy 7.0.  You only need to export data to a GEDCOM file when you are going to use a different make of software.  You can lose certain features and data when you export and import a gedcom file.

Therefore make a backup of your Legacy 6.0 data file and then import it into Legacy 7.0 and it will be upgraded accordingly.

Downside

Just what I said, although you made the point more succinctly Grin

To clarify my point on the GEDcom file

Quote
import information into Legacy 7 if needed.

ie if it all goes wrong and there is no alternative!

Which it shouldn't of course.

Thanks to you all for your help and advice which is much appreciated. I should be able
to achieve the transfer without any problems but with computers one never knows.
Cheers.

I am in trouble with my upgrade again. I have installed Legacy 7 deluxe all ok.

I have two family files for "O'Grady" and "Burt". I had back-up files as O'Grady.zip and Burt.zip

I went to "File" and "Restore family files" and clicked on O'Grady.zip and it unzipped the file as "O'Grady.fdb" in Legacy ok and these entries are transferred.

I have not been able to do the same with the "Burt.zip" file it won't open and just comes up as "O'Grady" again.

I presume I have tackled it in the wrong manner.
Which is the best way for me to unzip "Burt.zip" and put it into Legacy 7 as a .fdb file.?
I still have Legacy 6 standard installed.

I hope this diatribe isn't too confusing.

Are you saying you have 2 different files on Legacy?  All my familes are incorporated on the one tree.  The only way I know of putting two families up at the same time, is open Legacy as usual, presumably it will now show O'grady, click on View, choose Split Screen View and when it asks if you want to open a different file, say yes and you will get the option of opening the other one, they will be shown side by side.

Lizzie

ps.  Alternatively, go to Index and type in Burt and see if any appear.

No. All families are on the one tree. The Split Screen View works well for me.
Many thanks for your help. I must admit I am not that clued up on the Legacy programme and
I think I had better study the Manual before I go any further.
I am all sorted now LOL.

I had a problem with Legacy 6 some time ago, which resulted in a lot of information disappearing from a variety of trees. I found the only way round it was to reinput the tree under a different name, Lizzie will recognise Burton2, and when I had done that to delete the original tree. Fortunately none of the affected trees at that time had over 100 entries. As they have become larger I have become more and more paranoid about backups. I have at least 3 of each tree, all on different disks flash drives etc.

After you have installed Legacy 7, select Open File and navigate to where your Legacy 6 files are stored, which should be in the Legacy/Data folder on your C drive.

When you open the 6 file you should get a warning screen, as below. Just follow the instructions and your 6 file will be imported into 7. You should then do a SaveAs to save that file into where the Data files are stored in 7, which should be in Legacy7/Data on your C drive.

Just repeat this if you have more than one .fdb file.

When I upgraded I had 18 data files, I only upgrade them as I use them, so it isn't really a problem. No need to do then all at the same time.
