« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 06:48 UTC (UK) »

In the 1841 Census  William Pollock is living Kirkswold (Ayrshire) Age 30. Wife Mary (30) ChildrenJane 10, Alexander 8, Mary 6, Thomas 2.In the 1851 census they are still in Kirkswold but no William. Mary age 40 housewife born Kirkswold. Thomas 12 farm servant born Girvan, William 10, Elizabeth 6, Helen 3, James 1.All born Kirkswold. Can anyone tell me when William died? And anything of Mary (mother) Anything at all on this family would be welcome, as Thomas, the 12 year old farm servant migrated to Australia  1859 and eventually became my great grandfather

Hello Marg,

I dont know if you have the marriage date for William Pollock, and Mary Wilson, if not it looks like 18/Feb/1832. Girvan, Ayr.

Also there are several births to this couple which correspond to the ages of some of the children you mention,

Mary Pollock, born 15/Aug/1834. Kirkoswald, Ayr,
Helen Pollock, born Aug/1847. Kirkoswald, Ayr,
Elizabeth Pollock, born 15/Oct/1844. Kirkoswald, Ayr.

I cannot find any of the sons births.

I also think William Pollock, was still alive in 1861. and living in Girvan, with Mary, and two of their children, daughter Mary Pollock, aged 27. and son James Pollock, aged 11.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks for that Jonn. It looks like  William was not at home on the night of the 1851 Census. I thought perhaps both he  and Mary had died and that was why young Tom came to Australia. Not so it would seem! I have the marriage date and the birth of the girls. Can't find any boys. I also have a Jane born1830 (Girvan) and Jane born1833 died 1864. Interesting Mary is with her parents in 1861 She married a James Bartley. There was a son Thomas Pollock Bartley who came to Australia. He became a police officer.I am not sure he was Bartleys son as he appears to have been born some time before their marriage. (not impossible of course!) Another son Robert also came to Australia. Ionly found him by accident when looking details of Thomas Pollock Bartley
        Once again thanks
