Due east of Dalkeith, in this map of 1816, I have just spotted a site clearly marked "Airfield".

I've got a couple of Alan Godfrey maps for central Leeds published 1849 -but the town hall is on one of them which wasn't built until 1860.  So an unacknowledged revision - but yours seems exceptional!

Not sure when Ballooning started but would around at that time would it have been a place for them to land.

Seems bit small for conventional airfield - unless of course it doesn't actually refer to a place for planes to land but is something else. Can't think what though.
