 Sad

Can anyone do a look up at Newport Record Office please.

I have a Charles John Udall born in 1852 at Calbourne, mothers name given as HOLLIER but I would like to know if there are any baptismal records for Charles being baptised and who was named as the father.

Many thanks

Presumably you found this record via the IOW BDM index?  Calbourne is the district in which Charles was born and I think it was more likely Yarmouth or Freshwater where he was born.  His father would appear to have been Samuel Udall and his mother was Sarah, probably Dolling.  They married in 1839 in Clerkenwell.  The Hollier seems to be an aberration!  1861 gives Sarah's birth place as Beaulieu and there is a baptism for a Sarah Dolling there at the correct date.  The family is in Yarmouth in 1851, Portsea in 1861.  Other children match e.g. Edward and William.

Just some thoughts.

Hi Nell

I thought I had discovered a "skeleton in the cupboard", but  the IOW BDM index was incorrect! Thank you very much for confirming the information that Charles's parents were Sarah and Samuel Udall.

The only other mystery I have is I have a record of Louisa and Edward being Baptised  together in 1848.   Louisa's birth was registered  but I have been unable to find Edwards birth being registered although he always stated on the Census's that he was born on the IOW and when he died in 1927 his age was given as 80 which would make him born in 1847.  Louisa was born in 1845.

Do you think he is on  the IOW births but they have transcribed Udall incorrectly.

That is always a possibility.  I was puzzled too by the lack of Edward, but one cannot deny that he appears on at least two census with a birthplace of the Isle of Wight!  It would be interesting to know what the registrar's handwriting was like at that date.  If he can get Dolling and Hollier muddled (perhaps he was deaf?), the heaven knows what he might do with Udall!

HI

You don't have any thoughts as to how to go about finding a birth cert for Edward, as I am really sure he was born on the IOW and I can now confirm that all the other children have birth certificates.

Are you researching the Udalls?

No, 'fraid not.  I've been trying to find Edward on IOW site, but I've run out of variations to try for either Udall or Dolling.  Next step is GRO indexes at FreeBMD for just Edward in the right quarters.  Probelm is those searches can sometimes fall over since they take such a long time.  Undecided
