Gainford Co.Durham
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 06:45 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone enlighten me as to the meaning of the term "Germany" on the census returns for Gainford, this is in the column adjacent to the names, suggesting it is an area of the town.

Thanks
James

Hi James

Is it not where your person was born? If you give me the reference number for the census or post that part of the image we will be able to tell you for certain. I hope. Smiley

Evie
Thanks for your reply, I dont think the person was born in Germany, However, I don't have the actual facsimile of the 1841 Census sheet for Gainford  just the info from it on A4 sheet. I have scanned it and can email to you if you wish.

Hi James

What is the name and age of this person, I will have a look on the 1841 census for you as I like to look at the original if possible.

Thanks Evie

That is the name of an area of Gainford  Smiley Village of Gainford Germany
In the 1841 Census the country of birth is not given, only if it is Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts

It seems very odd  Huh There is no such name in the 1851 Census which just has 'Village'.
