Soldiers' Wills.
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 07:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

In view of their occupation,I believe that all Servicemen are required to make a Will.

As I have an Ancestor who was killed during WW1, I've wondered if his Will would have been kept with his other service documents and was probably lost in the bombing in WW2, or is there a chance it may have been stored somewhere else and therefore survived?

Also, where are soldiers' wills currently kept please?

Any info appreciated.

Barbara.

Hi Barbara

My Great Uncle's 'will' was a single form and is in the with the rest of his 'papers'. They could also fill in a page from their small books, that was left behind when they went over the top. If they had substantial wealth they would usually have one drawn up by a lawyer back home.

There is also this found on the Great War Forum - http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=121493&hl=wills

You may have to log into GWF for the link to work.

Hello Ken

Apologies for my late reply - been a lot going on recently.

Anyway, thanks for the information about soldier's wills.

I'm afraid that my Gt Uncle did not possess much so I suspect he would have been one of those who filled in the appropriate page in his small book, before he went ' over the top '

A friend has suggested that I should try the Probate Office in York but assuming that Gt Uncle did fill in a page in his small book, would York possess a copy of the details?

Would a copy have eventually ended up with them?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on that.

Cheers

Barbara.

Hi Barbara

Sorry, I only know of my great uncle's case and his will was with the rest of his papers. Have you followed the link to the GWF?

Whilst this may well not apply to every regiment and unit in every conflict, I have discovered that the archives of the Cambridgeshire Regiment hold the wills of soldiers from WW1. Possibly other archives hold similar information,

Hi Redroger,

Thanks for that, it's a good point.

The Cambridgeshire Regimental Museum is at Ely,and the archives are there; KOYLI have a museum at Doncaster, so I would be very surprised if there is no regimental museum for KSLI somewhere in the recruting vicinity.

Hi Redroger,

There is a KSLI Museum in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, so I will try and contact them to see if they hold wills of their soldiers from
WW1.

Thanks for that,

Cheers,

Barbara.

Barbara, If they don't reply and it's within range, why not pay them a visit?
