Alithea Ward
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 16:14 UTC (UK) »

Hello. Although I post lots of graveyard inscriptions I am not in to family history like many who post on the list.
However, there is one person that I am interested in and that is Alithea Ward, who I think was born in Sunderland about 1833 and married Thomas Tinkler in 1850 ish.
It would be interesting to see the results in the 1841 and 1851 census.

Hi Adam

Alithea Ward married Thomas Tinkler in Sunderland in 1854

So she will be single in 1851. I will have a look for you.

Hello again. What I should have said was that I do have the Stepping Stones CD's of the 1841 census
but I can not find Alithea Ward, so the 1841 would be great and the 1851 would be very helpful.
After I get that info it is the end of searching for me. I will stick to posting gravestone inscriptions.

Alethea Ward baptised Bishopwearmouth St. Michael 7 Dec 1832 d/o Robert and MaryAnn

Probable Sibs:

John baptised 4 July 1834
Margaret baptised 23 May 1828
Mary Jane baptised 22 Oct 1826
Robert Jackson baptised 17 Jan 1832

There is a marriage in Jarrow of Robert Ward and Mary Ann Burrows 12 May 1822

There is a burial of an Alithea Ward of Maude's Court, age 3 buried at St. Michael's 23 May 1828  (Same day Margaret was baptised)  I looked in Jarrow and Monkwearmouth for her baptism but not there.

Living with Mary Jane Bedford  Wife Marr  34  Tobacconist  b Sunderland

No husband listed for either of them at this address

This would tie in with the baptism found by 2zpool

I can't find Alithea / Alethea / Arrabella in 1841 or 1851.  Perhaps she was hiding in the coal shed   Cheesy Cheesy

Mary A Ward (other surname Burrows) married John Smart 1855, Sunderland

Still cannot find Alithea yet though Sad

Hi Adam

Still cannot find Alithea on the 1851 census on Anc. however she must have been in Sunderland District on the night of the census as Durham Records Online have her down as Allita (Alithea) Ward born abt 1833 Bishopwearmouth. Unfortunately I don't have credits to access their website to see the full census. i have tried using that spelling on Anc but with no luck.

The burial that Janis found for the first Alithea is also mentioned.

Oh and by the way you do a fantastic job posting all those graveyard inscriptions Smiley thank you

Now I see what you mean!  Those of us who are hooked on this hobby want to know the answers - even if they're not our family   Cheesy

Maybe troublesome 1851 census-the mother's name is different than the 1841--but then I have seen mistakes in the census on names before.

I had to go to my Stepping Stones CD's for this one

Sunderland 1851 Census
HO107/2397, folio 481, Pg 5

49 High Street

Margaret Ward, Head, widow, 53, Tobacconist, born Yorkshire
Mary J. Bedford, daughter, mar, 24, Mariner's Wife, Durham Bishopwearmouth
Robert Ward, son, unm, 20, Butcher, Durham Bishopwearmouth
Allita [Alithea] Ward, daur, unm, 18, Durham Bishopwearmouth
Ursula Ward, granddaur, 5 months, Durham Sunderland

That's brilliant Janis, I was still looking as I couldn't believe she wasn't there.

I put in the ref number out of curiosity and no matches found, so obviously it is missing from Ancestry.

So where is she in 1841 Undecided

Hello Janis. Thank you , that is the one that I was looking for.
On the wedding entry Alithea was married by licence to Thomas Tinkler of 25 High street given as a draper
and Alithea was living at 45 High street.
They went on to have children in Durham, Kent, Sussex and ireland and ended up at Stockton on Tees as Furniture dealers. (second hand I think)
That has got me going again so I will carry on with this one.
I think Mary as in the 1841 is the correct name.
