Hayes of Westhoughton

I am looking for any info of a John Hayes b. circ 1892 in westhoughton his father i think was called William and  they worked down pit,as a coal hewer whatever that is.
I think the family were origionally from Hindley, i have found some Hayes on the 1881 census in Hindley but am not sure if they are the ones i am looking for.
I have his daughters birth cert an it states that he was a Seargent in the East Surrey Regiment, was a colliery laborer below ground, and living in Sunderland, this is all i have to go on, any help greatly appreciated.
