Hi

http://derbyscourts.com/index/data/1844.html
Luke Rouse of Wirksworth
1844 Mar 19 Luke ROUSE 18 forgery of a request to deliver goods 2 years
1844/May/conditional pardon/sentence reduced to 4 months hard labour

So by all accounts he was to be out of jail by July 1844 (if the 4mths was taken from time of original conviction) or by Sep 1844 if the 4mths dated from May 1844.

You probably have this, with the ROUSE's on it  but just in case:

carole w and ambley.
i have been on the wirksworth parish records where i found all the births of the family.
i have tried family search in various countries but can come up with absolutely nothing.
the reason i am so interested in this ancester is because he is the brother of my great great grandfather who also spent time in prison in preston in the 1870s/1880s

This is a complete longshot

I wonder if he changed his name

The 1851 has a Luke Hall b 1826 Wirksworth but he is not on the 1841 with that birthyear

Temperance's maiden name was Gell (I said it was a longshot!!)

Hi,
Just in case you do not have details of his Court Case, the following is transcribed from the Derby Mercury
Issued on Wednesday, March 27th 1844.

DERBYSHIRE LENT ASSIZES
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20
"Luke Rouse, 18, charged with containing under false pretenses, at divers times, certain quantities of
bread, cheese and ale, and also certain monies, the property of Benjamin Frost.  Prisoner pleaded
not guilty to this case, but guilty to another indictment charging him with obtaining ale and bread and
cheese fromthe same prosecutor by means of a forged order. He was sentenced to 4months' imprisonment."

In 1841 Census, St. John's Street Wirksworth, there is a Benjamin Frost listed as Publican.

hi carole.
the only luke hall i can find in the 1851 census is an 81 year old living in staffordshire.
it looks like this is another blank in the family tree.
thanks all the same for your suggestions.

The info was from the 1851 census on Ancestry.  As you said you had checked the 1851 census I assumed you had access

It's a non-starter anyway as Luke Hall married twice and his second marriage is on the Vital Records Index and shows his father as William Hall

i subscribe to the genealogist site which is pretty good but i think most sites miss some things off.

i am going to admit defeat on luke as i think he must have emigrated at some point.
