I think this looks likely:

RG10 1032 86 38

Hastings

J. F. Barmer* 26 Carpenter bn St Leonards
Ann 25 wife bn Burwash
Frances E dtr 9 mths bn Hastings
Georgina Mercer sister 10 bn ST Leonards

* surname on image unclear - could be Baines, or anything else!

hi Lizdb

Thanks for the info, I was hoping to find her father's named as ? Mercer but as this is not the case, and with Georgina listed as Georgina Mercer and a good nine-year gap between her and Frances I wonder if Ann was married previous?

SOOO sorry, silly me! I missed out the vital word

Georgina's relationship to head of house was Sister.
I have ammended it now.
So sorry.

(still doesnt give parents, and poses the question was she J F's sister, born same place, in which case why has she a different surname, or was she Ann's sister...)

There is a 16 yr old James Frederick Barnes, born St Leonards,  in 1851 census at RG9 561 127 36, living with parents and numerous older siblings.
IF this is him, it is unlikely (nay probably impossible, as Mum is 56) that he has a new sister later in the year ... and anyway she would be a Barnes. Unless Dad has a fling with a lass called Mercer I suppose.
Probably not the right J F B., but I cant see any other candidates though.

Looks like £7 for Georgina's birth cert will be money well spent!

The plot thickens ...

James Frederick Barnes marries as follows-
Oct/NOv/Dec 1869
Hastings 2b 67

the brides are Ann West and Emma Mercer!

now on the face of it we would guess he married Ann West, as wife on 1871 census is Ann, but in view of the 'sister' with a Mercer surname one wonders if his wife Ann is actually Emma Mercer!

Emma Mercer is with her family in 1861 as a 12 yr old, bn ST Leonards - RG9 561 195 45, very near to the Barnes family. (But J F's wife Ann was born Burwash, so methinks they are not the same girl, and J F did marry Ann West after all ..)

Now i'm confused, surely if Georgina was a sister of James F Barnes then her name would be Georgina Barnes? not Georgina Mercer.

confused!!!

I am pretty certain the J F chap who she is with in 1871 IS James FrederickBarnes
Here he is in 1881, with clearer writing,
RG11 1030 57 24
St Leonards
James F Barnes 36 Carpenter bn Bexhill
Ann 35 bn Burwash
Frances 10
Frederick 8
Frank 5

so why does James Frederick Barnes, youngest son of Edward and Maria Barnes, or Ann nee West, have a sister about 15 years younger called Georgina Mercer!

I wonder if she was actually a sister to either, or some other rellie.

I have tried looking to see if Ann Barnes was actually nee Mercer with a brief marriage to a West before marrying JF, but no joy there.

Georgina could well be a child of the Mercer family in ST leonrds that I found, and therefore a sister to the Emma Mercer who married at a similar time to JF and Ann ... but that doesnt explian why she is described a sister on the census.

Got to be that certificate to solve it.

Hi
You did ask me to report back, so here I am.  I now have a copy of the marriage certificate for George Hudd & Georgina Mercer and I wonder if you could help locate their respective families with head of household Charles Mercer and Peter Hudd on the 1871 census from the details below.  Hopefully George Hudd and Georgina Mercer will be listed at home with their parents.

Note:  George Hudd’s occupation on the marriage cert dated 1880 is that of Policeman, by the 1881 census he is now listed as carter.  Any advice where I can locate his records as a policeman would be appreciated.

Marriage ceremony conducted at The Congregational Church, St Leonards on Sea [Old London Road]
Date: 4 Sept 1880
Place: St Leonards on Sea
Bride: Georgina Mercer
Age: 20
Occ: Laundress
Father: Charles Mercer, labourer

Groom: George Hudd
Age: 24
Occ: Policeman
Father: Peter Hudd, deceased, labourer

1881 census:
George Hudd, head, carter, 25 born Lewes, Sussex, England
Geogina Hudd, wife, laundress, 20, born St Leonards, Sussex, England
Walter Hudd, son, 01, born Hollington, Sussex
Dwelling: 17 Peyton Road
Census Place: Hastings St Leonards, Sussex, England

1861
RG9 561 195 46

Cliff Cottages, St Leonards

Charles Mercer 49 bricklayers labourer bn Cranbrook Kent
Sarah 36  bn Northiam Sussex
Emma 12
Elizabeth 10
William 5
Charlotte H 2   all children bn St Leonards
John Moon 34  lodger

So Georgina did have a sister Emma, but was it her who married JFBarnes and not Ann? Still a bit of a mystery there.
