Could anyone help me with the marriage of my GG grandfather Thomas Cartwright?
In the 1851 census he is listed as a watchmaker/finisher aged 46, born in Coventry, living in Sovereign Place, St Michaels, Coventry with wife Harriet aged 35 (born Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Flint) and children Henry (6), Fanny (3) and Ann (1) all born in Coventry; and unmarried sister Mary Lingford (24).

Welcome to Rootschat Silverlamp
The only marriage with both a Harriet and Thomas Cartwright I can find is not til 1849.
Thomas CARTWRIGHT December 1849 Aston 16 412 On same page Harriet BRYAN ( sounds welsh to me )
EDIT; Bit confused as 1851 census has Harriett born Coventry

Many thanks for the information and the welcome Trish.
Sorry for the confusion - the 1851 census shows Thomas married to Harriet; the 1861 census shows them living in St John's, Coventry and gives Harriet's birthplace as Welshpool. I suppose it's possible (but seems unlikely) that Thomas was married to two different Harriets at those dates.
I searched FreeBMD but could only find marriages involving Thomas Cartwright and Harriet in Kings Norton; one in 1850 (Harriet Withers on the same page) and another in 1851 (Harriet Louisa Choice). The Aston marriage with Harriet Bryan that you found is another possibility.
Most of my ancestors come from Stoke on Trent; Mary Frances, a daughter of Thomas and Harriet, is my great grandmother. Interestingly the 1871 census shows her as Mary FC Owen (b. Coventry), the adopted daughter of James Owen (b. Bradely(sic) Staffs) and his wife Fanny (b. Welshpool), along with two older siblings listed as nephew/niece with surname Cartwright, living in Hartshill, Newcastle under Lyme. In the 1861 census while living with her parents in Coventry she's simply Mary; perhaps the Frances came from this period living as the adopted daughter of her aunt Fanny (the C is surely Cartwright).
I suppose my next move is to research Harriets born in Welshpool around 1816 to try to find a match.
Simon

Hi again,
I will look at this again tomorrow night if no one else has helped you by then. Quite a puzzle you have Off to bed soon, its late here in Australia. Unless I have got the wrong 1861 Census it shows Harriett as just born Wales only. Children; Ann, 11 born 1850 Thomas, 9 born 1852 Phoebe, 7 born 1854 Harriett, 5 born 1856 MARY, 2 born 1859
1851 census has extra children Henry 5 born 1845, Fanny aged 3 born 1848
Cheers, Trish

1841 Census
I can't find any useful deaths on FBMD for an Amelia Cartwright before 1851, but maybe the marriage to Hariet in 1849 is correct and it is his second marriage.
Who was Mary Lingford on the 1851 census - sister-in-law??
A Mary Lingford was married in the June 1853 Q on FBMD.

Hi Trish
Well done.
By my calcs it is 3 am in Sydney!!! and you have made quite a few posts today - saw you on some others. Do you ever sleep???
My internet keeps dropping out so will log back in later.
But I think probably both Henry and Fanny could be from first marriage to Amelia. I will keep looking for Henry. Found a possible birth for him in Dec Q 1846 at Stoke-On-Trent, but nothing in Coventry.
Maybe Amelia's or Harriet's surname was Lingford and Mary Lingford is his sister in law?
Sweet dreams! Cello

Summary of Children:
Henry Cartwright b. ~ 1845 - poss. Sep Q 1844 Birmingham District[/font] Fanny Cartwright b. Dec Q 1847 Coventry District Ann Cartwright b. Dec Q 1849 Coventry District Thomas Cartwright b. Dec Q 1851 Coventry District Phoebe Cartwright b. Dec Q 1853 Coventry District Harriett Cartwright b. Dec Q 1856 Coventry District Mary Cartwright b. Mar Q 1859 Coventry District
Simon, Can you add any more exact dates for these births, particulary for Fanny, Ann and Thomas as it would be good to try and pinpoint where a possible first wife may have died, and which child was born to which wife, if there were two wives.
If we assume that Henry was born Jul/Aug/Sep 1844 and that Amelia died Jan/Feb/Mar 1846 and Fanny was born Oct/Nov/Dec 1847 AND that they did the 'right' thing Thomas and Harriett would have married between Apr 1846 and Mar 1847 - BUT I can't find them!!! Cello
