Death record -unable to find
« on: Friday 21 August 09 11:36 UTC (UK) »

Whilst on holiday in Cornwall I came across a gravestone in the churchyard at Constantine, near Falmouth as follows:

William COPELAND born 1/4/1776 Lancaster buried April 1847 Milford Hampshire. Other Copeland names appeared below.
Elizabeth Jane died 3/3/1840 buiried Woolwich
Georgiana died 15/4/1854 aged 17 months buried Falmouth
Georgiana died 16 Aug 1866 aged 20 months here interred.

I have tried to find out more about this family but have had no success. If I could find the death record of William that might start me off but I have cannot find a likely death in the GRO records or Family search. Can anyone suggest where else I might try please?

Hmm, I just wonder what William's occupation was that took him to these places.  Sea related by any chance?  But there again, he may never have set foot in Cornwall since the two Georgianas cannot be his, so who did they belong to?  Perhaps his son?  Have you found any of his family on the census?

The younger Georgiana was the daughter of George Alexandr Copeland and his wife Elizabeth Gilbert and baptised in Constantine 15 Oct 1862.

That may help - going to look for George in earlier census.

Aha,  George Alexander Copeland was the master gunner of Pendennis Castle in Falmouth  Smiley

He and his wife were there in 1851, he was born in Woolwich approx 1816.  They had 5 children then.

George Alexander was the son of William Copeland and his wife Priscilla, born and baptised in Woolwich - entry is on the IGI.

I am very grateful indeed, LittleNell and exceedingly impressed. All of them just missed censuses except for William but hadn't found him in 1841 census.  I had also thought of the 'sea' connection as a possible occupation.
Thanks again

Thanks again for your help. I have looked more closely at census records but am still puzzled by age of Georgiana when she died in 1866 as, if that was her baptised in Oct 1862 she would have been far more than 20 months old. She would have been almost 4 years old. Back to searching- thanks

Hello folks Smiley

FreeBMD has an 1847death for a William Copeland in Lymington Reg. Dist.   Milford  is in this Reg. Dist.

It looks like Priscilla died in 1860 in Southampton Reg. Dist. (FreeBMD)

Have you found William in the 1841 Census?

You are right about Georgiana's age.  But have you seen how many children by the name of Georgiana Copeland were registered in the Falmouth RD!  There must have been more than one family, I think.
