John Martin
« on: Friday 21 August 09 14:44 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I'm looking for any connections to an ancestor of mine called John Martin.

John Martin was born in Monmouthshire, Wales, on Jan 15th 1862. His father was also John and born in Wales.

In 1915 John was living at 513, South Wyoming Alley, Butte.

He died in Butte on Aug 3rd 1915.
Buried at Mt View Cemetery.
Undertaker - Joseph Richards.
He was widowed
His profession was miner.

He had atleast one child - a son who at the time of John's death lived in Pennsylvania.

We'd really like to find any relatives in the US - so ideally would like to discover anything regarding his wife and children.

cheers

Terry

Hi Terry:

Were you able to find the family on the 1910 census?  Do you know when John immigrated?  There currently are at least 5 Buttes in America.  Do you know in which state Butte is located, please?

Update:  It appears that Butte is in Montana.

Hello Lisa, hope all is well in California,

Yes, John died in Butte, Montana, but the guy seems to have been a bit of a wanderer and I've been unable to pin him down at all - other than birth and death.

My guess is that he left Wales for the US in the mid 1880's but it' just a guess as I couldn't find a John Martin from Wales emigrating around that time. I'm also guessing he would have left Liverpool and arrived in New York - but I don't even know that for certain. My grandmother remembers her father saying his letters were postmarked Utah, Salt Lake City and that he was digging for gold - and so the story goes - with some success. I did try the varying US Census searches - but no luck - maybe I did something wrong, maybe he's off the radar - or maybe I need that bit of luck - either way I promised my gran I'd keep looking - so many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Assuming I am correct in the post above and John Martin was still in Wales in 1881 then the following passenger record may be your John Martin:

Arrival Date: June 9, 1890

John James Martin estimated birth year 1862

Ships Name: City of Chicago
Departure: Liverpool
Arrival: New York
Destination: Michigan
