Help needed for SLOANE marriage
« on: Friday 21 August 09 15:20 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find the Marriage of John SLOANE b. 1821 to Margaret ROBERTS b. 1818, both born in the Parish of Caerhun
On the 1851 census they are listed as married, living at Glanrafon, Rowen and the surname is spelt SLONE, on ancestry it came up when looking for HONE.
Their son, also named John is born abt. 1844, so the marriage should be before this date.
Thank you,
Brian

Hi Tarnwater,

The earliest John Sloane/Sloan/Slone marriage I can find for Caernarvonshire is for a John Sloan in Oct-Nov-Dec 1864.

Their later children from the 1851 census, Ann, Jane & William, seem to be on the Free BMD birth index but I can't see the oldest child John.

There is a marriage for a John Stone in the district of Conway in Oct-Nov-Dec, 1843. There is a Mary Roberts and a Margaret Rowlands on the same page although something has gone awry I think because there are 2 men and 5 women on the page.

Cheers,
Gwyn

Gwyn,
The SLOANE's are proving hard to find at times. On FMB for marriages in Dec 1843 at Conway, there is a John STONE [could be John SLONE], however there is no Margaret ROBERTS, only a Mary ROBERTS or a Margaret Rowlands.
John 's death is another mystery, he dies between 1881 and 1891.
Onward and upward, thanks for helping,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Yeah, I only mentioned the John Stone entry because it was a partial match and that something has gone wrong with the transcription on the BMD index with two men and five women on the page. Maybe one of those women should be Margaret Roberts.

Just had a quick search on the Gale newspaper archives and couldn't find what happened to John Sloane. I did find a John Sloane, aged 10, son of a Margaret Sloane who was a witness at a murder trial as printed in the North Wales Chronicle of July 29 1853 under the headline 'The Roe Murder'. Looks like the same family.

Cheers,
Gwyn

Hello Gwynt,
That is a very interesting piece of news about the 'Roe Murder', I shall look into the story and try and find out more.
Thank you,
Brian

If Woody32 is reading this, I was having difficulty sending you a PM. There was an error message.
I shall try again.
