Charles Reddicliffe of Peter Tavy, Devon
« on: Friday 21 August 09 17:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

I am on a Camping holiday in Someset; and, as you do, got chatting to another camper about family history.  Apparently she never knew her father as he died just before she was born - but she would like to try and find something out about her family.
Her mother was Betty Ellen REDDICLIFFE and she was born in 1920 and Christened in Petertavy church in Devon and from that birth certificate she found out that the father was a Charles REDDICLIFFE.(also possibly born in Petertavy)
Betty Ellens mother was named Beatrice Bessie - and that is about all she knows of her parents / grandparents.

Looking on FreeBMD we have a marriage of a Charles T REDDICLIFFE to a Beatrice B SMITH in Dec 1919 at Tavistock; which is just 12 months prior to the birth of Betty Ellen

1901 and 1911 census do not show a Charles T Reddicliffe - they only indicate a Charles born 1868 in Tavistock region, Charles Henry born 1892 in Tavistock and a Charles Montague born 1898 in Tavistock region

Can anyone help me with this little puzzle please

Hi Chris,

The 1881 census shows a Charles Thos Reddicliffe age 3 born Bridestow, living at Thrushelton.

Do you think he's too old?  Undecided

Possibly showing as Charley Thomas Reddicliffe in 1911 - probably married to a Florence though (and with 5 children), but she seems to die in Mar 1919. His birth was registered as Charley Thomas, I notice but his marriage in 1902 seems to be in the name Thomas Charles Reddicliffe.

Hi Tati

Thanks for that 1881 household - looks very promising.

The rest of the info you gave i am not so sure about, but will keep in mind just in case.

Going to try and pump them for any other little bit of info - but it all seems to revolve around the church at Petertavy in devon

thanks anyway chuck
