Cornish Miners dieing abroad
« on: Friday 21 August 09 22:34 UTC (UK) »

It's happened again. Embarrassed  ...my ggrandfather is un-traceable and it looks like my gggrandfather must have also died abroad, but I don't know where.

Does anyone know how the families at home would have found out about the death. Did the local papers always print deaths of the local men away working Huh
The last time he was on the census is 1871 and then his wife appears as a Widow in 1891.

I have searched UK in-coming passenger lists to try and get an idea of where he might have been mining, but he's not on it.

Has anyone got any ideas of where else I can search please.

What is his name?  I am helping Spanish descendants of a Cornish miner from Calstock who emigrated and died in Tharsis, Andalucia, Spain.  I would be very surprised if his family published an obituary in a Cornish newspaper, and none was published in the local newspaper in Spain.  If he married and had children overseas, the events may have been registered at a British Consulate and indexed as BMDs Overseas in the Consular Registers which you can see at FindMyPast.com.  Others went to Victoria state in Australia which has verygood records of incoming passengers and searchable bmd registrations.

Thank you for your interest CottonHistorian. Smiley
His name was Nicholas Thomas b1841. His wife and children  remained here, their last child being born 1874.  so he must have gone abroad after that time.

It is most likely that his mother and siblings also went around the same time, so I will take your advice and start with Victoria in Australia.

Hello CottonHistorian,

Many thanks for the Link, Cool
I will delve into it later as many of my family dis-appeared abroad somewhere, and that looks like a very good place to start. Wink

My ggrandfather isn't one of those people listed, but I will be checking out the other Nicholas Thomas's in case  one of them is from another part of my family.

Once again, many thanks for your help.

Hi, further to where some of the Cornish miners worked abroad - whilst researching  a friend's family, I found that one of his Cornish ancestors worked as a gold miner in Johannesburg, South Africa. He obviously came back at intervals as he had quite a few children.  ::)This was early in the 1900s. Good luck with your search  Ronnie

Hi ambers, my gt. grandfather died in Johannesburg in 1898 gold mining. I was able to log into NAAIRS which is the South African online database and find his death. In the event I actually employed a S.A. researcher to go to Cape Town and get all the relevent documents, which didn't cost me much.

http://www.national.archives.gov.za/

I have had a quick look and found four notable records regarding Nicholas Thomas. Two records of Death Notices for 1892 and two for Estate Papers. Of course this is assuming he could be your ancestor. I found nothing for Richard Eddy unfortunately,

Anyway, I hope this might help you in your quest. Good Luck.

You may want to try this site too.  I found it as one of my ancestors from London was involved with a company dealing in mining equipment supplies in Mexico

Hi j-allen,

Many thanks for your interest. Cheesy

I did find my Nicholas Thomas b1841 living in Colorado ,plus his death there. As Nicholas Thomas is a family name and followed  through the generations, it's possible they are connected to me in some way so that Link will be very handy Grin.
As for my ggrandad Richard Eddy, he is still an enigma Roll Eyes, I am having to re-search others of the same name and birthyear.  There is a possibility that he didn't die when the family thought he did Lips Sealed, so I am investigating one that died six years later at the moment...fingers crossed for a newspaper cutting be found.

I would also add  that if possible to find out if any local newspaper archives are available.

The brother of one of my ancestors up and left his family, popping home periodically as there were no obvious gaps between children!  Roll Eyes
But someone found an obituary clipped from an Australian newspaper tucked into the family bible which announced his death in Australia, and details of his comings and goings between Cornwall & Australia.

As there is a headstone for him (with his wife and son added later)  in Cornwall we would never have known he'd even left Cornwall were it not for that fortuitous find!  Shocked

Hi Britgirl,

Grandfather Richard Eddy has lead me a dance for many a year, every so often I start the search again with a fresh mind  Roll Eyes

I have ruled the one that died in 1907 by getting his death certificate and report of his Inquest in the papers...wrong father!!!!

I am back tracing the 1902 death. Having had a search done before and being told that nothing was reported in the  papers I was surprised to hear that this time a report has been found.  Huh   but as I have all the certificates and Will for this man I don't think I will learn anything new...I expected it in the post to-day.
I know he is not buried or mentioned on his wife (married again) or children's headstones...oh, for a Bible or cutting to turn up somewhere. Embarrassed

An up-date as I can see by the hits of the Thread many were interested. Smiley

Richard Eddy born 1871 died 1902, (mother Sarah Trembath and father Richard Eddy) the write up in the paper names about seventy Mourners and also gives the names of the people who sent floral tributes.

My ggrandmother Eliza Jane (Thomas) Eddy is not mentioned neither is her son Richard Eddy b1899.....

Just goes to show how ever perfect the census information matches  the certificates we order, there can still be room for error....after receiving his will I realised something must be wrong when my ggrandmother wasn't mentioned.
I have been scratching around for any  proof I could find ever since.

As no one else on the census matches my ggrandfathers marriage details, I am stuck.   I suppose there is always the possibility that he was born abroad of Cornish parents that moved because of the Gold rush...ambers clutching at straws now Roll Eyes
