Thomas Milne any info
« on: Friday 21 August 09 23:24 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any info on Thomas Milne born 1883 in Peterhead Scotland, his parents were
Joseph Milne and Margret Pirie. Thomas left Scotland on the ship SS Royal George in 1920.
Passenger ship list says he is going to his sister-in-laws =
Mrs C Jorrall at Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. New York.  I can`t fit this lady into the family
and i can find nothing more on Thomas after he sailed. Any info however small
would be much appreciated. Thanks  Roe.

Hi Roe  Smiley

The manifest indicates:
he arrived in the US on 10 April 1920 - before the US Census of that year.
he was coming permanently to the US.
the sister-in-law's specific address was 694 Ridge Place
he was a married man & his wife Mrs Thomas Milne was still in Kilsyth, Scotland
he was a quarrier by trade

Do you know the name of his wife? Perhaps she followed him over with child(ren ?

Cheers

Thanks Ambly, Yes thats the correct Thomas Milne and his wife was Maggie McKay born 1883 in Aberdeen,Scot.
Maggie and her 6yr old son and 5 yr old daughter stayed behind in Kilsyth and they never went to New York
and as far as is known in the family Thomas never returned to Scotland, Maggie(my granny) died in Kilsyth in 1964.
It would be fantastic to find out what happened to Thomas,(did he and granny divorce, did he remarry in
America?) So many questions and as yet no answers.

Hi Susan, I've just checked the signature on the above certificate with the signature on the
marriage info (from Scotlands people) and they are the same, so definitely the correct person.
Your a star, many thanks Roe.

Description: NARA M1164. A card index to naturalization petitions filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York from November 1925 through December 1957.
   • Admission Year: 1927
   • Immigrant Full Name: MILNE, Thomas
   • Age: 44

It was on footnote http://www.footnote.com/

But I could not find him in 1930 census - nor do I know if there is any further info available on the naturalization petitions -
Perhaps someone can try the 1930 census on Ancestry

1930 census Massachusetts » MIDDLESEX » SOMERVILLE CITY, WARD 4 » 9-435 » Sheet 2a

This is interesting - same year of birth and occupation

Was he really born in Massachusetts

It looks like the age at 1st marriage for both that Thomas & his wife was 16 years earlier.  If that's accurate, unless they both married other people in the same year, it seems like it wouldn't fit Thomas immigrating in 1920.

That looks as if its him but he was definitely born in Aberdeen Scotland.

Thank you  shellyesq and Susan, i know he married in 24.11.1913 in Glasgow Scotland.
He was 29yrs on marriage.  maybe he never divorced and is not telling the truth on
the 1930 census. Its a strange one and i just can`t get to the bottom of it but i will
keep digging.   I have joined footnote that you gave me the link for.
Thank you again. Roe
