CD drive disappeared
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 06:37 UTC (UK) »

I have a fairly new Acer computer, running Vista.
I tried to play a CD with some photographs on it and nothing happens.
When I look at My Computer I can't see it there.
What can I do? I should say I also tried a music CD with the same result

Thanks wini

There is a regedit fix for this problem that you may want to explore.  You will need to edit this key:

Quote
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

1.Click on the start menu.
2.If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
3.Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.
4.In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
5.Restart Windows.

Other solutions include going into Device Manager and deleting your CD/DVD device and then rebooting your computer.  Windows will then detect the device and build a profile of the 'new' device.

The instructions didn't work for me. I managed to delete the CD/drive but when I restarted it wouldn't do it.
I think having googled the drive which is a Mash*ta DVD-Ram UJ-8755ATA it may be faulty . The comp is still under warranty so I might have to see about finding somewhere to get it fixed.

Have you looked at the connections on the SATA drive ?   SATA cables do have a nasty tendency to fall out.

A CD/DVD is not a SATA drive (Serial ATA) it still uses the old IDE connectors.

In the last few years SATA hard drives are now replacing the old IDE old  PATA (Parallel ATA) drives.

When you boot up Wini, does Windows detect your CD/DVD drive?
Is is listed in Device Manager?

O.K.
I have gone into Device Manager and found list. DVD/Cd drive had a minus sign in the little box on the left.
Underneath was the Matsh*ta business. It had a yellow exclamation mark on it. I clicked on that and it asked me if I had the latest driver. clicked on that and it came up that the latest driver was installed.
Clicked on the DVD/CD drive and a plus sign came up but still no joy and when I go back into Device Manager it is back to having a minus sign..

I know it is most likely me and I do appreciate all your suggestions

The minus sign means you have expanded a level of your device tree and is therefore not a problem.  If you click on any device it does the same.

What you could do is Troubleshoot the device.  When you open the General tab for the device there is a Troubleshoot button.  Follow the wizard steps to see if it resolves the problem.

Also that a look in Event Viewer to see if it has errors for your device.

Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Event Viewer

Check the System section for any errors.  Double click the error and see what it says.  Click on the link to Microsoft for more information and a possible solution.

Sorry to split hairs, but CD/DVD drives with SATA interfaces have been available for some time now.  My own PC is fitted with one  Smiley

Wini, try right-clicking your CD drive in Device Manager, and select "uninstall".  Then at the top of the listing, on the computer name, right-click and select "scan for hardware changes".

This has nothing to do with SATA  - it seems to be a misreading of:

UJ-8755ATA

i.e a number 5 in front of ATA .

Wini

Can you confirm the make and model of your drive?

If it is Matsh*[i]ta DVD RAM UJ-850S ATA then there may be a solution using Sony drivers here:

Ah - so Windows realised there was a problem .... but I cant really understand what you did when asked about Drivers - a 'rollback' of the old one and a reinstall of a new one should have happened ....
