It is all too hard for my brain. I have tried the uninstall bit and switched off the comp. and restarted.
I looked at Event Viewer and found the CD drive but I couldn't see a Microsoft link.
It makes the usual noise when I put a CD in. I have tried several to make sure it wasn't the discs.

Yes, bad news, the little yellow exclamation mark is still on the Mash*ta DVD/CD rom drive

Think I will have to take it somewhere.
Could it be a faulty unit?.

What is the error number and error message associated with the device?

Downside,

The message I get is "Windows cannot start this device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged Code 19
When I click on "check solutions" the message is "could not load driver software"

Thank you for  the time you are  all spending on this

According to this Microsoft link and scroll down to code 19:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123

Your registry entry may have become corrupted.  Taking it to somewhere may not help because the actual hardware does not seem to be damaged and therefore require replacing.  This seems to be a software problem.

Have you uninstalled the software as suggested in this article?

As this device used to work, in theory if you rollback the driver it should work.

Yes Downside,
I have tried the uninstall business and that didn't work. I read the next bit about the registry and it seems to be for XP. I have Vista on this machine

Ah - so Windows realised there was a problem .... but I cant really understand what you did when asked about Drivers - a 'rollback' of the old one and a reinstall of a new one should have happened ....

you need to look more closely at the options offered by clicking / right clicking on the yellow highlighted device entry.

I cant recreate it here, so you will have to experiment !

Pretty much everyone (including Vista users) managed to get their device working when they edited their registry.

Quote
Click the Start button, and then in the search box, type regedit.
Press the Enter key.
NOTE: If prompted for an administrator password or a User Account Control prompt is displayed, type the appropriate password or click Continue.

In the Registry Editor window, in the left pane, double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, double-click the System folder.
In the System folder, double-click the CurrentControlSet folder.
In the CurrentControlSet folder, double-click the Control folder.
In the Control folder, double-click the Class folder.
In the Class folder, click to select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder.
In the right pane, click to select the UpperFilters registry value.
On the menu bar, click Edit.
In the Edit menu, click Delete.
In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.
In the right pane, click to select the LowerFilters registry value.
On the menu bar, click Edit.
In the Edit menu, click Delete.
In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.
NOTE: Do not delete the UpperFiltersBak or LowerFiltersBak registry values.

If that doesn't work then you will need to get hold of some equivalent Sony drivers.

You should be able to get the basic read functions for any ATAPI compliant drive using the basic Vista drivers.

Thanks for all the help. Still getting nowhere but will let you know if, when and how.
I did send an email to Acer Help Desk, I had an automated response saying I would get a reply within 4 working hours.
They must have long hours because 36 hours later I haven't heard anything
