Hi, ive been researching my family history and ive found that some of my ancesters emigrated to america in 1900. I found them on a shipping manifest and also on the american census for west virginia and I was wondering if anybody could give me any advice about what else i could do to get any further information?
Their names were, maurice donovan, father Johanna donovan, mother nora donovan, daughter maurice donovan jr,son william donovan, son edward donovan, son joseph donovan, son mary welsh, stepdaughter
They lived in the marshall and benwood area of west virginia, and According to the censuses mary welsh emigrated in 1898,maurice donovan in1899,and the rest of the family in 1900.
any help would be great
thanks

If they remained there, there are many West Virginia birth, marriage, and death records available here: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx and here: http://familysearchlabs.org/ If Johanna's maiden name was Fah(e)y, the Family Search Labs site has Ohio death records for their children Maurice Patrick Donovan and Mary McBride and a West Virginia death record for son John Joseph Donovan.

Hi zx123: Shelly and I were typing a the same time!
Go to the LDS Familysearch Pilot website (http://pilot.familysearch.org), and click on Canada and U.S. on the map, and then scroll down until you come to the West Virginia birth, marriage, and death records. You'll find deaths and marriages for some of your Donovans, including Joseph Sr., Johanna (in death records, her last name spelled Donovin), and some of the children.
Regards, John

In the 1930 Census, it looks like Maurice, William, & Edward are living in Benwood at the address that William is at in his WWII draft card. It looks like Maurice is divorced, and Edward is married with 2 children. You can see the 1930 Census for free at footnote.com for the month of August.

The draft registration cards were on Ancestry. All men of a certain age were required to register, so the existence of the card doesn't necessarily mean that they served in the military.
The death certificate that I found for Maurice Patrick Donovan says that he served in WWI and was being buried in Arlington National Cemetery. However, I can't find him on the military grave website here: http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1
On the 1930 Census on the far right, there is a column for military service. It says that William Donovan was in WWI, but Edward was not.
Found this also, but not sure if it's your Joseph, as there's a WWII Draft card for a guy with the same birth date and the WV death records shows that John Joseph, son of Maurice & Johanna, died 27 Apr. 1924: WWI Draft Registration Card John Joseph Donavan McMichen (?), Marshall Co., W.Va. Born 25 Apr. 1890 in Benwood, W.Va. Machine shop foreman - B & O Railroad Co. in Benwood Dependents - wife and one child, 2 yrs. Married, caucasian, no prior military service, no exemptions from the draft

WWII Draft Registration Card Maurice Donovan Under residence, State Soldiers Home, Erie Co., Ohio is typed in, but crossed out. Underneath it, 389 East Cheny (?) St. is written in. Telephone - OSSH 1050 Age 47, born 18 Jan. 1895 in Wales White, 5'8" tall, 148 lbs. Gray eyes, brown hair, light complexion
In the 1920 Census, Maurice appears to be in Camp Pike in Pulaski, Arkansas. He is listed as born Ireland, but he seems like the most likely match. He was a private in the US Army. It says he immigrated in 1900 and was naturalized by his father (I believe that minor children would get naturalized if their parent was while they were underage.)
