Royal Flying Corps
« on: Thursday 03 March 05 07:44 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for a Frederick Walter Mitchell, 24, who married Jessica Wood on 30 September 1915 in the registry office at Steyning, Sussex.

On the marriage cert. he is described as 'First Air Mechanic, Royal Flying Corps' with residence at time of marriage 'The Aerodrome, Lancing". His father Edwin was a jeweller.

No other information, I'm afraid, and I've tried everything I can think of.

Any ideas??

How about the 1901 census?  There are two Frederick W Mitchells aged 11 for instance - one in London, one in Northampton.  Is one with an Edwin?  You can check earlier ages on the index.  Lots of just Frederick of course but that might narrow it down for a search on 1837online.  There can't be too many of that name born around that time.    The Flying Corps must have good records - at Kew perhaps?   Did he survive the war?   Is he on the Commonwealth grave site or in the medal lists on National Archives?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I have looked at every Frederick Mitchell of the right age in England in 1901, but still no joy.

Any ideas about the availability and/or whereabouts of enlistment records?

There is an article about the RFC in Practical Family History for April.  It recommends www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWRFC and www.flying-museum.org.uk/royalflyingcorps.html
Also www.thearearodrome.com
I expect the enlistment records will be at KEW

Thanks Andrea for the web addresses - I'll give them a go.

I'm in NZ, so I'll have to put the visit to Kew on hold for a while!

Cheers,
