Could anyone help me find my GG grandfather James Bourne. I've found him in the all the censuses from 1861 onwards.
In the 1861 census he is a potter aged 29 living at Henry Street, Tunstall with wife Mahala (nee Cook) and children Sarah E (5) and Ann M (9mo)(my great grandmother) and a house servant Caroline Cooper (12).
I'm hoping that the 1851 census (and maybe even 1841) will show who his parents are.

Sorry - I should have said that the censuses show him as born in Tunstall.

Thanks Past Master and Willow.
Past Master - I haven't found her in 1851, but in 1841 there is a Mahala daughter of William and Thirza (Thurza) in Brook St, Longport, Burslem.

Daisy - that's fantastic - just what I was hoping for. Thanks very much for your time and trouble, and I'm full of admiration for your sleuthing.
I've ordered the marriage certificate for James and Mahala, which I hope will confirm Thomas as James' father. If so, it takes me back another generation.
There seems to be a wide variation in the reported ages of the Bourne family between the 1841 and 1851 censuses - would that be unusual?
I wonder if Mahala Byrne is Thirza's daughter? If so, it could explain her absence.

Hi,
The ages in the 1841 census should have been rounded down to the nearest five for everyone under 15, but maybe they did it for the children as well to 5. I've seen all sorts on the 1841 It doesn't explain the age difference for Thomas and Sarah, maybe they just wanted to close the age gap
At the moment I can't find Thirza nor any other reference to Mahala BYRNE, I'll have a look tomorrow wheb I have more time, unless someone finds them first
Daisy
