Hi,

I have a suggestion about Mahala BYRNE, but it is a bit of a long shot...

I have looked at the GRO images 1841-1844 and cannot find a Mahala or Female BYRN/BYRNE, I also find no sign of her after 1851.

William and Thirza COOKE had a daughter Emma,

Emma COOKE
Christening:  05 JUN 1814   Saint John, Burslem
Father:  William COOKE
Mother:  Thirza

I think she married another Thomas BOURNE, (not the father of James).

Emma COOK
Thomas BOURNE
Marriage Date: 10 Apr 1837 Audley, Staffordshire

1841  HO107/987/5  f.24  p.5  Burslem
Devenport Street

Thomas   30    Potter
Emma      25    Potter
Thirza       2
Emily        2mo          All born in County

Birth
Mahala BOURNE    Dec Q 1843    Wolstanton    17   255

1851  HO107/2003  f.488  p.32  Burslem
Albert Street

Thomas    Head    40    Potter
Emma       Wife    37
Thirza      Daur    12    Potter
Emmila     Daur     9
Mahala     Daur     7
Henery     Son     5
Mary       Daur     3
Eliza        Daur     1mo            All born Burslem Staffordshire

I'm just wondering if Mahala was staying with her Grandparents on the night of the census but still living with her parents, and so got enumerated twice. I have seen this happen before. She is at age 18 still with her parents in 1861  RG9/1928  f.75  p.31 Burslem, (transcribed as BOARD). Let me know if you want this transcribed. I then lose sight of her Sad

Hi,

I can't find Thirza COOK/E in 1851 but she does seem to be the only one born about 1831 in the area. There is this marriage and death which could be Thirza Undecided

Marriage
Thirza COOK    Mar Q 1854    Wolstanton    6b  93
William DEASINGTON with same details.

IGI
Thirza COOK
Father:  William COOK
Spouse:  William DEASINGTON
Father:  Samuel DEASINGTON
Marriage:  02 JAN 1854   St John, Burslem

Death
Thirza DEASINGTON    Dec Q 1854    Wolstanton    6b  66

Maybe she died in childbirth,

Birth
Mary Elizabeth DEASINGTON    Dec Q 1854    Wolstanton    6b  88

Death
Mary Elizabeth DEASINGTON    Dec Q 1854    Wolstanton    6b  68

Daisy, I'm lost in admiration Shocked. Thanks again for all the time and effort you've put into answering my queries.

I had no knowledge of William and Thirza's daughter Emma before, so finding her is great.

It hadn't occurred to me to consider a possible Byrne/Bourne confusion, but it does all seem to make sense. There seem to be plenty of Bournes in the area, so it's entirely possible that the two daughters married men of the same surname. It just goes to show that very little is straightforward in interpreting all these data, and trying to make a continuous thread out of all the discrete strands.

You also did a great job finding out what became of Thirza (I'm not aware of any other Thirza Cooks with father William, so it seems probable that it's her). How terrible it must have been for the family to lose her and her daughter at the same time. From what I understand about the 19th century, childbirth was the most common cause of death for women, but this is one of the few occasions I've seen it in my tree (unsurprising really as I've only been looking at direct ancestors).

Thanks for the offer on the 1861 census, but as I've got enough on investigating my direct line at present, and their granddaughter Mahala isn't on it, I won't ask for the transcription.

Update - I just got James' and Mahala's marriage certificate of 21 Sep 1851.

James is 21, bachelor, potter of Burslem, s. of Thomas Bourne, potter.
Mahala is 23, spinster of Burslem, d. of William Cook, potter.

Many thanks Daisy and Passed Master for your help. I'm confident we've identified a further generation in the family tree.
