Help please Thomas Clarke, Wolverhampton
« on: Monday 24 August 09 13:27 UTC (UK) »

I would be grateful if anyone could help me with the problems I am having with my family tree.

My grtgrandad was Thomas Clarke my nan (his daughter) has said that he was born in March 1888 in Wolverhampton, I have his marriage certificate from 8/10/21 which states that he was 33, a batchelor with the occupation of gas fitter and that his father was also Thomas Clarke occupation Labourer at iron foundary. However I can not find a record of his birth in Wolverhampton, nor can I find a concrete census record, although there are lots of Thomas Clarkes born in Wolverhampton, I am also having problems with Thomas Snr.

My nan states that his wife was called Jinny/Jenny/Jeannie and that Thomas Snr died around 1930 and that his wife died a few years later. I have found a Thomas Clarke dying in Wolverhampton in 1929 aged 73, but am not sure if that is him. If one Thomas matches the census, I can't get the other to fit!! I have been trying to sort this out for the last 5 months and it is driving me mad. I do not have the funds to order lots of certificates and have already spent too much trying to get further along.

Please help!!

Many thanks in advance

I researched the first one and the father was not Thomas.

I will definitely check the other one.
I have just been looking if I could find them earlier, but can not. Fanny should show up in the 1881 census, could anyone find them? I will continue looking. I have not been able to find a marriage either.

My nan has confirmed the children, William was a witness at Thomas Jnrs wedding.

Many many thanks to you all

You may be better off getting a birth certificate of William or Fanny to find the mothers maiden name..

Hi

Many thanks for that, I have 3 William Clarks and 1 William Clarke. Do you think that they changed their name or that it was some sort of error with the registrar not checking the spelling? Also the change of job, was it common to change career?

Hi there

I haven't been able to go back further that my grt grandad yet (born 1888), I am still waiting for the Thomas Clark birth cert to see if it is him. It does look like the 'e' has been left off though, as the Thomas that I think is my grt grt grandad has the 'e' and then it seems to get lost until my grt grandad got married in 1921, my theory is that they didn't have copies of the certificates and didn't realise probably until the 1900's and then added it again.
I will post here again though when I have the right certificate and need help again!!!! lol

Hi all
The certificate came today and it is the second Thomas Clark and his mother is Jane!!
Now I am looking for his parents marriage details, here's what I have so far:

Thomas Clark(e) born 1856 in Shropshire, parent are Samuel and Eliza Clark(e)

Jane Bruton born 1859 in Wolverhampton parents are Timothy Bruton and Jane Walker

I have searched and searched on ancestry and can not find any marriage details so that I can order the certificate to confirm parentage.

Any help would be great.
Many thanks

Wolverhampton registrars would do a search for you, no charge if the right person isnt found, and they search 5 years either side of the actual date you give (I believe thats right)
Ive ordered several from there (i am in Wolverhampton)

Ive just looked up there website for ytou, maybe call them first?
heres there details
