This is what part of the canal is like today (not at Tallington, but near Uffington, a couple of miles to the west). http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/608236

There is a footpath alongside part of it which I walked a few years ago when my knees were in better condition than they are today  Grin

Thanks Ricky, that's great.
I need to piece it all together now and see what to investigate next, i've looked for Charles and Elizabeths marriage but to no avail.

For the record I think the 1861 census says Leicester, Hadden.

What looks like an 'e' as the second letter is in fact a loop of the initial 'H'. The enumerator wrote 'e' in a rather strange way (see how he has written it in Leicester.)

I think this is the marriage for
George Goodliff
but has been written as

George Goodley
1850
Stamford
Dec Quarter
Lincs/ Hunts/ Rutland / Northants
vol 14
page 1013

on the same page is Martha Scotney

In reply to Ricky, i'm pretty sure that marriage of 1849 is the right one and that Charles' wife is Elizabeth Meadows, as their son John Goodliffe is living with a Meadows family in 1881.

thanks alot
