People coming into the country - how to find?
« on: Monday 24 August 09 16:18 UTC (UK) »

Hiya,

Where would I go to find info on people coming into the country, from abroad, before 1841? We don't know the country of origin, and we're not sure how to find that out either - anyone with any ideas please?

Thanks!

I think I shall need that luck, as all we have to go on is the fact that, in 1841, he is listed in the census as 'being from foreign parts', which isn't terribly helpful!

Not sure where to start, really :-(

It's all very approx...

His name is Fredrick William Rumke (could also be Rumkee).
he was married in 1809 (we know that as fact) and he is listed in the 1841 census as being 60, so we're working on the assumption that he was born in 1781 (ish) and is listed simply as 'being from foreign parts' in the 1841 census.
We have no idea when he arrived in the country, and from where.

Hi Rose....a lot of searches are drawing blanks...there are only three at a glance on the IGI none which fit...you might find something here:

Thanks hon, lots to look at there.
You're right, though, they don't seem to fit...
It's SO annoying to have drawn a blank at this point - there's always been a family legend that they (this is my man's family tree) were from abroad and it has surprised my OH to discover the family was in Hull for so long before arriving.
Now we've found the point at which the family arrived, it seems, but can't find how or from where.
