Look Up Request, Beverley Archives COMPLETED WITH MANY THANKS TO JILL
« on: Monday 24 August 09 18:01 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I wonder whether anyone who is planning to visit Beverley Archives would be kind enough to see whether they can find out any further information on the following court appearance.  I am trying to establish whether the person was my great, great, great grandmother.

Midsummer General Quarter Sessions held at Sessions House, Beverley

28th June 1880

Elizabeth Ireland  Attempt to commit Suicide.

I have obtained this information from the Criminal Registers on Ancestry and wondered whether there may be further details of the case either in other court records or in the newspaper at the time, which might help me to establish whether it was my great, great, great grandmother or not.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance which anyone could give me in order to obtain further information

Thank You
CJL

Hi,

Do you have access to Gale Newspapers?

If your Elizabeth Ireland is the one who lived in Wold Newton near Pocklington, there are a couple of newspaper cuttings from the Hull Packet of 1879 and 1880 which you will be interested in. It appears that Elizabeth stole some items and was so eaten up with guilt that she tried to poison herself.

I don't know if I can post them on Rootschat because of copyright? If you'd like to PM me with your email address, I can try to send them to you, though I'm not sure how to do it - I'll give it a whirl!

Failing that, I can type them out for you - they're not very long.

Jill,

Thank you ever so much,  My great, great, great grandmother Elizabeth Ireland did live in Wold Newton.

I have tried but obviously not as successfully as you to search the Hull Packet newspaper, I will take another look and if I am not successful, would you mind posting the dates in which the articles appear in the Hull Packet.

Thank you so much for replying to my post.

Very Best Wishes

I made a note of the dates:

April 11 1879 under the heading District News is the report of the theft

July 2 1880 East Riding Quarter Sessions is the report of her attempted suicide and 'trial'.

Hope you find them okay.

Jill.

Thank you so much, I will take a look now.  If I have any problems finding the articles, can I come back to you?

I have a number of East Yorkshire parish register transcripts and would be more than happy to take a look through any of them if I can be of any help to you.  There is a list of the registers I have on the look up offers board if you want to take a look.

Once again thank you so much for taking the time and the trouble to look on the Gale site, I really appreciate it.

Very Best Wishes

Jill,

Just to confirm that I have located the articles, thanks to you.

The articles didn't refer to my great, great, great grandmother, but the Elizabeth referred to must fit into my family tree somewhere because my family were from Wold Newton.

Once again many thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Best Wishes

I'm glad you found them, even if they aren't about your Elizabeth.

As a matter of interest, have you looked on the East Riding of Yorkshire Record Office online index:

http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/cs/culture-and-information/archives/archive-search

There are a few items about an Elizabeth Ireland but she is quite a few years earlier than the 1880 one. Possibly not relevant, but might be worth a look.

I would think you would be able to order copies.

I've never had to ask, because I can get them done whilst I wait but I think there's probably a downloadable order form on their website. Most other Record Offices have that service, so I'd be surprised if East Yorks don't.
