On Scotland's People I have found two Marriage entries for the following couple: James Bain and Elizabeth Bennet
one on 1-6-1816 in Kirkcaldy Fife and another on 7-6-1816 in Auchtertool Fife.
Am I correct in thinking that the first is for Banns and the second is for the marriage?
Which should I use 5 credits to view? Which will contain the most information or will they both contain the same?
Elizabeth is from London and James is from Abbotshall. I am hoping for clues as to whereabouts in London Elizabeth is from. Do Fife PR's at this time give this information?
These may relate to publication of the banns in the two parishes where the couple were residing prior to the marriage. It's pot luck which to open....depends on the usual practice of the guy whose job it was to record the details.
Don't expect too much from a pre-1855 record. If you're lucky, you might get the name and occupation of the bride's father.
If their deaths were post-1855 in Scotland, this will offer a richer source of information.
hi ruskie are you sure you've got the right james bain, on freecen census 1841 abbotshall
BAIN James M 40 Linen Hand Loom Weaver Fife BAIN Elizabeth F 40 Fife BAIN Mary F 15 Bleacher Of Yarn Fife BAIN John M 15 Painter Apprentice Fife BAIN David M 15 Shoemaker Apprentice Fife BAIN Elizabeth F 5 Fife
this is possibly the marriage you're researching in which case this elizabeth is from auchtertool and not london. only other possibility which looks more likely is 1841 cameron fife roughly about 15 miles from abbotshall

Ruskie, I don't suppose mother Elizabeth made it past 1855 to get details of her parents?
Hibee, I just bought a pre 1855 Dumbartonshire marriage which gave that little bit extra info (bride's father and occupation ) and I was wondering if Fife marriages gave the same 'extras' - if so they would be worth a look.
Jacci - many thanks for the PM. The Bains I am researching are the ones Monica found in 1851 (thanks Monica ).
Unfortunately Bettey/Betty/Betsy/ Betsey/Elizabeth died after the 1851 census. I have been unable to find her death on SP, before or after 1855.
I have James's death in 1872. It's Elizabeth who's my brick wall at the moment. Common name combined with probable birth in London = nightmare.
